I just picked up my first Dreamcast! (Rage story inside)

So about a week ago I went to a game store near me. Nothing interested me, so on our way out the door, my friend goes "hey look a Dreamcast controller." The owner says "hey I could sell you a system with two games and two controllers for $20!" I was excited and agreed. He goes into his back room and brings out a Genesis. "Oops I thought this is what you were talking about! The only Dreamcast I have is broken." (>_>) Needless to say I left disappointed...

Well a couple of days ago my friend and I hit up some yard sales and found the house of a guy who was selling merchandise from a closed-down game store (Jackpot!)

I ended up picking up a Dreamcast with no cables along with a VMU, Phantasy Star Online and RE: Code Veronica. Also picked up 6 PS1 games, two original Game Boys, and a blue Game Gear (which sadly did not work). I ended up paying $20 for everything, so not a bad deal.

Remembering a few days before when the store owner said he had a broken Dreamcast, we decided to go back and ask if he'd sell the cables for it. "Well I don't know, those are kind of rare guys! Holdon a sec let me go look for them!" So he goes back, and brings out a box containing a working Dreamcast with 3 controllers and all the cables (which he just told me two days ago that he didn't have).

I was getting kind of pissed off at this point, and the guy goes "I need the cables for this system, but I can at least let you guys test out the one you bought here." He plugs the cables into it, powers it on, I hear sound from the bootup sequence come from the TV but no picture. "Well guys it looks like this unit is broken, you have no video. If you're interested I can sell you this set I have here." I said no and left.

When I got home I cannibalized the power cord from my PS1 and plugged it into the Dreamcast, and ordered a video cable off ebay. It arrived today, and guess what? The Dreamcast works flawlessly. I'm guessing the jerk at the game store didn't plug the video part of the cable into the back of the TV, told me it was broken, and tried to get me to buy his system instead. Nice try buddy. I am never going back to that dirtbag's store again in my entire life.

Anyway, sorry for the long story. I am enjoying my purchase happily now and am glad to own another system to collect for. I hope to begin picking up games soon.

Either that or his video cable or the dreamcast was broken like he said and just was trying to get you to give him money. Either he wouldn't give you a refund or just let you give it back for store credit.

Congrats on the DC!
I got mine from a pawn shop for $4.00 because the guy told me it was broken. I brought it home, poped a game in and it worked flawlessly. The next time I was at the pawn shop I asked the guy what was wrong with it...
Aparently the problem he had was it wouldn't play a video DVD

I had 4 of them at one time. Right now I have 2.

If you want to go the fancy route, Get a black sega sports dreamcast.

They are kinda rare, but you may get lucky and find one out there. Some sellers dont know what they have or dont care.

If you go to fleamarkets or yard sales, hit up the cd stacks. Dreamcast games are sometimes mixed in with audio CDs.

have fun finding those awesome games. Or just burn them.

Enjoy your dreamcast! DC is one of my favorite systems ever, soo much fun and soo many good games and the good games are not extremely expensive unlike the saturn.

Sucks you had to go through all that trouble but congrats on the Dreamcast!
If you have not already, definitely get Marvel vs. Capcom 2, that's my favorite game for the system.

I currently use my brothers Dreamcast... that he sort of just left with me and doesn't have any intentions on coming back for it (It's been at my house for 2 years now!).

Just recently I imported and played through all the Sakura Wars games on it. Great stuff!

It is amazing how little some of these game store owners actually know,it is almost like they have no knowledge or interest in games themselves it just a job lol.

nice story and youll def have a blast with the dreamcast, just make sure to pick up Shenmue
