Internet sales tax?
Re: Internet sales tax?
Typical big government...
Re: Internet sales tax?
I won't like paying the tax, but is this really the worst idea? It should increase tax revenue and potentially bring more people back to local stores/shops since they won't be saving on sales tax.
That said, I don't think that the U.S. Congress should be putting this through - it should be a state by state issue (like was done in NY).

in michigan it's on the honor system practically (you're supposed to claim out of state purchases on your taxes)- I don't buy much online any more, but in the past i'd claim my stuff and just pay the 6%... i'd rather it go to my state than the feds anyway.

Need FreeMCboot? I'll install it on your PS2 Memory Card for free if you cover postage both ways.
Consoles: I have too much stuff
Arcade: No seriously, I have too much stuff. Someone grab a shovel and dig me out of my basement.

I'm bumping this.
Amazon is going to start charging sales tax on Tennessee residents... and I'm mad.
Amazon being tax-free was my sole reason for going there. Go to any store in TN and try to buy a game at full retail price (say a $60 game). You'll be taxed about $5.
Saving five bucks may not sound like a lot but if you buy a lot of new releases it does add up to some significant savings. And I'm not even including amazon's frequent price drops on games...
Dang. I guess I'm done with amazon now. And some of you may be thinking "What's the big deal? It's just a small tax. You're overreacting."
No. Saving money is the reason I shop online. Thankfully, amazon isn't the only online shopping site.

Try living in WA, where it's always been that way.Opa Opa wrote:I'm bumping this.

The other aspect that might be important to you is saving time and having the convenience of items being delivered to your door. I would still shop at Amazon for those factors.Opa Opa wrote: No. Saving money is the reason I shop online. Thankfully, amazon isn't the only online shopping site.

But as he stated he gets that from other online retailers. What I would state, is the Customer Service and other policies that Amazon has that protect the buyer are reasons to shop there.gtmtnbiker wrote:The other aspect that might be important to you is saving time and having the convenience of items being delivered to your door. It seems really bizarre for the federal government to intervene in the individual states' tax collecting.

Depending on where you live.
As someone who specializes in e-commerce, I expect some companies to have to pay back taxes. I check the tax rates quarterly, and I'd hate to live in NY or DC right now if I made major purchases on-line.
It's going to get a lot stricter. I for one think the government needs to better define "a purchase". They're making a killing on on-line purchases, but only in select states. Makes no sense to me.
