Re: i want to put a fan in my genesis2
What's the point? Just because? To make it not quiet anymore?
I don't think overheating was ever an issue on the Genesis, was it?

Unless you're having overheating issues, it is mostly pointless and the Genesis doesn't really have any nice flat areas you coud put a fan without it ending up being an ugly hole. I suppose you could put it on the bottom, but that's going to be really restricted and if it is sucking air in, it will hoover up all the dust that lands on the table around the system which will end up clogging vents and making it probably end up running hotter unless you clean it all the time. As mentioned, then it will be noisy too.
If you're determined to hack the Genesis up and stick it in there, 2 of the wires will be power and the third is likely either an RPM monitor (like PC fans use) or perhaps a secondary voltage input to allow for low and high fan speeds. I don't have a slim so I don't know if the fan adjusts its speed at all.

Is this for the Neptune that you were asking how to paint properly?

ZenErik and Hobie bring up good points, the Genesis does not need it and the dust contamination issue. I know what you mean in the mod urge to say that it can be done, so I see why you still want to try.
I'm not familiar with the internal Genesis voltages and the PS2 fan volt/amp requirements. A risk if the amp draw of the fan might damage the Genesis PCB. The safest way would to solder to the PCB just where the power supply plugs into the Genesis, augmented by a higher amp rated power brick. I suspect the voltage of the fan would be a different rating though.
There are other easier Mod options such as adding LEDs, a trick paint job or even adding plastic like an air breather grill of sorts. Please post results of what you come up with, looking for a Chrome Hotrod Blower out of a model car kit sitting near the cart port.

If you want your Genesis to look more 'hardcore' or something, I'd recommend just getting a Sega CD. At least that will actually improve the systems capabilities.
If you really want to put a fan in a model 2 (which IMO is pointless and not going to look very cool) I think you're going to have to hunt around for a 3/4 version. Those model 2s don't have as large a board, so there will be more room in the case for potentially adding something. I haven't measured, but it might be possible to fit a fan.
But yeah, there are definitely more practical mods.

I can't help you but, I agree with pretty much everyone; this may not be the best thing to do to your Genesis.
Unless you're also contemplating speed holes as well, you might wanna pass on the unneeded case mutilation.
If you're still gung-ho for this, at least make a 'paint' conceptual drawing to get people on board. Perhaps we just can't see the awesome-ness yet.
