Post a photo & description of a cool item in your collection

I thought that it might be fun to have thread where we periodically post a cool single item from our collection and share a brief description/story about it. We have threads to show off large sets or collections, threads to discuss recent "finds," etc. - but no dedicated place to highlight something interesting we own and might want to share.

Important: don't just post a photo or a description: do both!

The point of the thread is not to compete/one-up/brag/etc., it is simply to highlight some of the cool centerpieces, oddities, sentimental items, or other treasured items in your collection. It could be a Nintendo World Championship cart or a scratched up Madden 2003 disc - if it is special to you and you can explain why, post it! Feel free to make multiple posts over time, but otherwise just post an item and then let other people comment/post their own for a bit before putting up another item.

You can choose to discuss price or not, but I thought this would be a nice alternative to share things that aren't necessarily valuable or rare per se but that we still think are pretty damn cool. It is also a great place to share that item or two that you've had in your collection for some time.

Quake III Arena Elite Edition



Description: This isn't an especially valuable part of my collection nor is it exceedingly rare, but it is one of the earliest CE editions of a game that I remember buying at retail on release day (at the EB Games in Carousel Mall in Syracuse, NY) and it remains some of my favorite packaging for any game I have. I consider Quake III to be the pinnacle of iD's amazing work in the 1990s and the golden standard for a beautiful engine that moves quickly and controls perfectly, so a sturdy and unique case for one of my all time favorite games is something that I am happy to have. The steel case - very much a novelty when it was released - has raised text and symbols that accentuate the "circuity" artwork on the case, and is much nicer looking than the later retail rereleases of the game in my opinion. It has also retained its retail value (and a little bit more) many years after its release, which is a rarity for most popular games of the time period. There's really nothing included in it beyond the packaging (it would barely qualify as a CE by today's standards), but I still think it is a cool little part of my collection.

First, here's a couch. It has nothing to do with gaming, but it is retro. Got it from an antique store. It rocks.



And here is my Sega tie. It has Sonic, Toejam and Earl(!), ecco the dolphin(!) and. . . michael jackson or something? It's not tied because I have no idea how to tie a tie but if I ever have to wear one, it will be this one.

The limited UK release of Wipeout HD with Fury DLC. Seems pretty hard to find as there are very few available on eBay international at any given time. I had a copy before that I loaned to a friend, but it turned out to be one of those loans. You know, the ones that aren't actually loans.

It's probably sitting in a dumpster or on a used GameStop shelf somewhere now. Still VERY bitter about that. Doesn't help the kid's turned into a cocky shithead I never have the desire to see again.

Anyways, this copy popped up on eBay from a US seller last week so I nabbed it while I could. I definitely don't plan to let anybody touch this one but me. I love Wipeout and I can forsee this being valuable in the future with such a limited release.

Cyberdemon model kit


this is a hand made model kit, i.e. the sculpture was molded in silicone rubber by hand. most likely in the producers garage, and the parts were cast in resin one at a time.

this kit was made by Skyhook models and is way out of production. I only have the Pinkie and Cyberdemon. my actual kits are unbuilt and buried in my collection of "garage kits" the kit is about 8-9 inches tall.

oh and BTW, I bought the lennox edition of Q3A just to get that tin box

Nice selection of pieces to start us out! That tie is wonderfully horrible (where did you get it?), that cyberdemon is fucking awesome (you really should put one together - what are you waiting for?), and that Wipeout Fury retail release has been on my radar for some time but I haven't gotten around to it yet...

I hope this thread takes off, as y'all certainly picked up the spirit of the OP very well

That Quake III box is so cool, I wouldn't mind getting a hold of one of those myself. Quake III is probably my most played online game ever, played it to hell and back for 2 or 3 years straight.

I have quite a few things that I think are cool in some way that I'd like to share but I'll go one at a time.



The remains of my original Sega Genesis collection I had as a kid. My parents sold (or possibly just tossed) my first Genesis and the majority of my games, but somehow these guys were able to seek refuge in my closet. I was cleaning it out one day back in... probably 2007ish and stumbled upon them. At the time I wasn't much of a retro gamer, would be down for some Mario or whatever at friend's houses. But after finding them buried in there, I got the urge to go to my local retro game shop/pawn shop, get a Genesis, and play them. I ended up having a blast with them and pretty much playing them for days on end. Brought me back to the days when my Genesis was pretty much my best pal, and also the good times I had playing it with my human pals. Found myself then seeking out more Genesis games, and now I've rebuilt my collection entirely, and then some. This of course led to me collecting more consoles and games, etc etc.

This event sparked my obsession with collecting and playing retro games/systems, so I hold these guys pretty dear, despite them being just your run of the mill beat up Genesis carts. They both started and rekindled my love for classic gaming.

I got this bad boy on a road trip to New York in July of 2001 with my dad. This was around the launch of the system and it was sold out everywhere. From Florida all the way up the east coast we stopped at every Walmart and Target looking for one with no success.

Finally a Walmart in some small Virginia town received a few of them...only problem was that they were all fuchsia and this was kind of a deal breaker for an eleven year old. However, after reading every article on the system in every magazine I could get my hands on I sucked up my preteen pride and told my dad it was ok and I would take it. So that day I left Walmart with a brand new GBA, Super Mario Advance, F-Zero Maximum Velocity, and Castlevania Circle of the Moon.

On the way back home we passed by another Walmart and they had this beautiful Arctic GBA and they were kind enough to exchange my pink model for this one.

Ebay. $20. Wasn't sure if it was worth it or not, but it seemed like a rare find so I figured what the hell. And donated $1 to haiti so it all worked out.
