So I Just Played Through CoD 2 in 2 Sittings and...
*EDIT* YES THIS TOPIC IS RUSHED AND I WAS VERY EXCITED DUE TO JUST BEATING SUCH AN AWESOME GAME. FOR A MORE CLARIFIED, STRAIGHTFORWARD EXPLANATION OF WHAT I'M TRYING TO SAY, GO TO PAGE 3 PLEASE.
WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED TO THIS ONCE GREAT SERIES! I swear, it's not just CoD, but for the entire FPS genre, WW2 shooters really a lost art. CoD 2 was amazing! After finally playing through the whole game, my eyes are wide and my jaw is dropped. It is emotional, epic, and most importantly super fun! Seriously, how did the series turn into to absolute garbage like MW3 and what will most likely also suck, Black Ops 2??? AAA games of all kinds have been really pissing me off lately, but my god I want the old CoD back! There has to be some developer out there willing to make a new good WW2 shooter! Same goes for Battlefield and Medal of Honor. What were once great WW2 shooters are now crap modern and futuristic shooters.
Also, notice that the FPS genre was built around WW2 shooters, with the exception of Halo, Half-Life, and Time Crisis. WW2 shooters made the FPS genre the big hit it is today. Now MW3 is the first CoD to not outsell its predecessor since I think Finest Hour or CoD 3. Does this mean that possibly the modern FPS games are finally losing appeal? Perhaps the genre will go full circle. I really hope Black Ops 2 is a complete failure, because that might finally spawn some more great WW2 shooters.
*EDIT* Also what are your favorite WW2 shooters? What would you recommend I play? I have Call of Duty 3 and Medal of Honor Frontline coming in the mail now, but are there any other games. I've already played Medal of Honor Rising Sun and European Assault which were fantastic.

I do not think any WW2-themed shooter is notable at all with the exception of Wolfestein 3D, whose thematic connections to reality aren't exactly strong. The other really important shooters are Doom and Quake, which aren't WW2 shooters and Dark Forces and Duke Nukem were more influential than any WW2 ever was.pankakes123 wrote:Also, notice that the FPS genre was built around WW2 shooters, with the exception of Halo, Half-Life, and Time Crisis.
Time Crisis is a light gun game first and foremost.

Sorry, I should have made this clear. I'm really focusing on console FPS here. I've never been a PC gamer, and games like Wolfenstein, Doom, and Duke Nukem were not very influential on console. Console was more based around CoD, Medal of Honor, a little Battlefield, Brothers in Arms, etc.General_Norris wrote:I do not think any WW2-themed shooter is notable at all with the exception of Wolfestein 3D, whose thematic connections to reality aren't exactly strong. No, no, no. FPS was originally a PC genre, thus, all the original PC games counter in to the development of current console FPS games. Look at the earliest examples of FPS's on consoles. Guess what? Doom ports or Quake ports. When you get to the N64/PS1 era, guess what? Doom and Quake. Now, the beginning of WWII comes in, and sadly, I was never impressed. WWII games can be fun, but really and truthfully I have yet to have one seriously strike a chord with me.pankakes123 wrote:Sorry, I should have made this clear. Personally, I want to see some games from the following wars, of higher quality then they have been covered:
Vietnam, Korean War, American Civil War, American Revolution, and please give me a freaking WWI game!

Since they created the genre that's quite a claim!pankakes123 wrote:Sorry, I should have made this clear. I'm really focusing on console FPS here. I've never been a PC gamer, and games like Wolfenstein, Doom, and Duke Nukem were not very influential on console.
I do not find any game or any influences in design to be driving forces behind what we could call the "modern" console FPS. The games I see right now seem to be created by external marketing tendencies and concesions of controller use than development. I do not think CoD has anything that differentiates it from other games of the same kind so I can't call it influential.Console was more based around CoD, Medal of Honor, a little Battlefield, Brothers in Arms, etc.
But that's quite the talk here.

And I say no, no, no to you. The top PC games of the WW2 console shooter times was Quake and Half-Life and other games like that. Back then FPS were totally different on console and PC. And in regards to your Doom and Quake being on SNES, PSX, etc. Those were in no way influential on console, receiving much more attention on PC. The console versions of those games were almost all bad ports in an attempt to milk off the name of Doom, Quake, Duke Nukem, whatever.

Yeah they were. Some of the first FPS games appearing on consoles were Wolf3D and various versions of DOOM. Duke3D was also on a number of them. Alien vs Predator and later Alien Trilogy, Quake...you even had attempts at some original ones like the 3DO and SNES Jurassic Park game segments.pankakes123 wrote: Sorry, I should have made this clear. Then you had the N64 ones like Goldeneye and Perfect Dark that better established that consoles could support original games.
It wasn't until a fair bit into the Playstation's life, after the genre already had a foothold, that you started having the rash of WWII shooters. Possibly, the big reason was Saving Private Ryan, and the general trend of WWII games and movies for a while. In the meantime, plenty of more varied FPS games were coming out, from No One Lives Forever, to Deus Ex, to Unreal Tournament.
CoD/Medal of Honor/etc are just one style, and the modern games are (to a point) a logical extension of that style. Much like Tekken, I didn't like it when I tried the originals back in the day, so I've largely not bothered with any of them

TBH, I don't think the pre-MW COD games have aged all that well. And I wouldn't play any of the MOH games today except the original and Underground for nostalgia's sake, and AA because it's just so good. Frontline in particular has aged horribly.

You really haven't been playing games that long have you? "WW2 console shooter times"? You mean the mid 2000's? When Doom and Quake had one new release each? Also Quake and Duke Nukem were great on the Saturn, Doom had quality ports on the PlayStation and Nintendo 64, and Quake 3 was fantastic on the Dreamcast. You seem to be very confused. And I say no, no, no to you. The top PC games of the WW2 console shooter times was Quake and Half-Life and other games like that.
