Help figuring out a movie!

Post by Lazer »

Ok, I was around 8-11 years old (so about 1984-1987), and I saw a movie in the theater. It's a cartoon. I'm pretty sure it was in 3D. This is all I remember plot-wise: people are underground working (mining?), they are slaves. They are unaware that there is a surface. To them underground is reality. The surface is a myth. One scrappy, plucky youngster believes the myth. He escapes somehow and makes it to the surface. It's real! Then he is chased and stuff, I don't remember the rest.
That's all I have. Did I dream this? I may have been slightly younger/older.
Help?

Maybe read over the wiki article and check titles?

You know, I could have sworn I tried the internet on this a few months ago with no luck, but right after I posted this I tried again and:

Starchaser: The Legend of Orin

Got it! Has anyone seen this? Apparently it's a big Star Wars rip-off. I have always remembered it, it made an impression on me. It came out in 1985, so my guess was right on .

Ha, next time I'll search first!

Ah, the 80s, when sci-fi films were almost always fantasy films.

Starchaser overall isn't good in my opinion. I'd compare it to Cool World in the sense that it displays a lot of great animation that could alone make it worth watching, except that from every other standpoint it's thoroughly terrible. It's also famous for being highly derivative of Star Wars (it is), which is really distracting.

Wasn't it made around the same time as Heavy Metal and other Bakshi movies (Wizards, Felix, etc)? I remember it came on cable a few years ago at my sister's place, HBO I think. It was ok. Not super great, but... interesting.

I got Starchaser in a lot of anime LaserDiscs several months ago... I've not yet been inspired to watch it.
But it seems to be the kind of movie that, if you're going to own, you should own on LaserDisc. :P
