I would also like to add that, like the Defense of Marriage Act, this completely and blatantly contradicts the Full Faith and Credit clause of the US Constitution. It also, along with every other same sex marriage ban in the country is blatantly unconstitutional (see Loving v. Virginia SCOTUS decision, 1967).

Disagree here because the flip side of that is potential lost votes. The safe play was staying away from one side or the other. I'm impressed he came off the fence here.

I kind of just don't care either way, and I think a lot of other people feel the same way. My typical political viewpoint is to not really care one way or another unless it directly affects me. Maybe that is callous or selfish but just how it is I guess... I could go around and get angry at all the injustices, real or perceived, in the world and get angry and worked up and passionate about them. But that would be a never ending task and I am just not that passionate.

I don't understand the hate against it though. Banning gay marriage won't stop people from being gay obviously. I guess more people trying to push their personal morals or beliefs upon others.

Well, I'm a liberal (I mean that in terms of the international relations theory, not the American political spectrum term), so I care (probably too much) about any social injustice. I can CERTAINLY understand your point of view, though.

The reason people want to ban gay marriage is because they view the legalization of gay marriage as the government approving of homosexual behavior, rather than simply allowing homosexual behavior. Basically the government would be condoning something they believe is morally wrong.

As this thread has shown, nobody wants a government that they believe is acting immorally.

I'm totally against homosexuality myself. I find it morally wrong and physically disgusting, but I don't think it's the government's job to be our moral guardians.

However, there are two reservations I'd like to make: first, marriage is a legal status, and is in no way a civil right. Second, in areas where gay marriage is legal, no one should be forced to wed gays if they feel it's wrong. If a pastor doesn't want to hold a gay wedding, there should be no legal repercussions. Just like an attorney doesn't have to take a case he doesn't like, no one should have to make the legal ties between two people.

I just find it weird that one of the central political issues in recent years, which people have invested lots of time and money into, is making sure that gay people can't marry.



Seriously, it affects pretty much no one other than gay people (and those that love them), but there are a LOT of straight (primarily religious) people up in arms about gay people getting married. I don't even know what the Christian religion is about anymore other than hating gays and loving unborn babies. It's the only thing I ever hear them talk about anymore (I thought there was something about love thy neighbor, and some golden rule, and 10 commandments or something, but I haven't heard a religious man talk like that in a long time). I personally have lots of gay friends and family members and I love them and want to see them be happy and be treated equally. It's weird to me that so many people are going out of their way to make sure that doesn't happen.

Anyway, I'm happy Obama came out in support of it.

Why? I deal with people I don't like at work all the time. I don't deny them their rights as a citizen.
