Thanks for the replies guys.

I should have been more specific, here's a brief rundown on why I used those substances:

I received the game and it didn't work. I scrubbed the contacts with a Q-Tip and 99% (I believe, I know it was over 91% because I thought it might be too high of a percentage and asked for 91%, which they didn't have)

The game still didn't work, so I opened it and repeated the process again and again with no luck. This is when I made this thread as well as a similar thread on NintendoAge.

It was recommended on NintendoAge that Weiman's Brass Polish and Weiman's Glass Stovetop cleaner can and have cleaned cartridges that couldn't be cleaned with the regular alcohol methods.

After cleaning the contacts with these substances, I cleaned them again multiple times with the 99% rubbing alcohol to ensure there was no residue left. I also dry them with a t-shirt and let them sit for 5+ minutes before putting them in the console.

Somewhere in the middle of all that I also tried scrubbing the contacts with one of those non-static cloths that come with the security bit when you order it from nintendorepairs.

I figured it would be okay to do this since A) The game isn't working right now anyway, and B) It's a fairly cheap game and easy to replace.

One thing I haven't tried is scrubbing it with the alcohol dampened shirt or dry shirt. I've only used the shirt for drying. I'll try this one tonight.

Hopefully that's enough justification for using those substances.

edit - I forgot to mention a couple things.
The Glass Stove Cleaner did end up getting a ton of extra grime off the contacts, even when the alcohol soaked q-tip was staying perfectly white. It didn't fix Starfox, but it did fix Final Fight.

Yeah, I expected a condom or something.

Why is glass cleaner bad to use? Or is it just not as good? I always read that Windex is a good alternative to rubbing alcohol (since I'm both lazy and forgetful when it comes to shopping).

No no no no!   *sigh*

Windex had perfume and coloring in it. That is left behind so you still left it dirty. Contact cleaner is best, but the highest percentage of alcohol you can find is ok.

Though That bit with the picture of the pink/grey eraser needs to be changed. That's gond too far and taken all the gold off the contacts. Don't use the grey sandy side of those dual erasers on contacts unless they're so corroded that they're green. The grey side has sand in it to actually remove paper surface to allow you to erase ball point pen ink.

I have two Genesis carts that have corroded green. What household cleaners would you recommend to take care of the job? 91% rubbing alcohol just isn't doing it, and I don't have those eraser things.

Green scrubby kitchen sponge. It is a bit rough, but not too rough like sandpaper. That plus the alcohol. Go slowly a bit at a time as you can still end up scraping all the gold off and the green lacquer coating above the pins too. Just make sure to clean well with the alcohol after.

Those erasers aren't expensive and can be found with office supplies. Even if you use it for erasing too, they'll last forever. But they aren't going to cut green corrosion.

Windex has a lot more than that in it. It also has ammonia in it. According to my pops, back in the day you didn't buy window cleaner. You just mixed ammonia and vinegar, and maybe dilute it with water. You can read the ingredients here, straight from the SC&J site:

http://www.whatsinsidescjohnson.com/en- ... eaner.aspx

Read those ingredients and then try to tell me it sounds OK to use on the contacts.
