Sony has a database but it's a pain to use, since you have to have the game number on the side of the case. It also doesn't consider GH versions vs. black label. I know that some GH games work (a Final Fantasy game iirc) while the black label versions don't.

Try pcsxr for mac it looks great. I can see all the sharp quality of polygons. Just select OpenGL it looks better than a n64 game. I've have yet to try the latest version, but willing to do so very soon.

I don't know if this fits the topic but I played Crash bandicoot from PSN on HDTV and it looked fine.

I use the pSX emulator to play my PS1 games on my TV. The main reason I switched is because I will have an Asian region PS3 soon, and it will not play US releases. I can just hook up my laptop to my TV and pop regular ole PS1 discs in my laptop's BD drive. Works pretty well. Looks better than playing on the PS3 too.

I would use my PSOne, but it looks like garbage on my LCD TV. Wish I had a CRT.

considering PS3 games are not region-locked, what will be the point in getting a PS3 from another region?
