That is not really true any more than hours are the smallest unit of time. Inside the date there are hours, just like inside the hours there are minutes. A hand in the middle of day 1 and day 2 would mean its 12:00 of day 1, just like when you have the hour hand in the middle of 1:00 and 2:00 means it is 1:30.

A better objection is that it is particularly unfriendly to have that display given that there are different numbers of days on some months (not always 30). In the end that is just an aspect of trying to give a number by another way instead of just giving the number in the first place.
