My picks are pretty mainstream popular and nothing niche, not that i dont enjoy the niche or hidden gems.

1. Contra 3
2. Gradius 3
3. U.N. Squadron (SNES version)
4. Aero Fighters
5. Darius Twin

Time to join the 32-bit generation, Mr. Hazerd.
I also highly suspect you haven't gotten much into Genesis/MD and TG-16/PCE shoot 'em ups?

Gradius 3 is awesome, but have you tried Gradius Gaiden or Gradius V? Aero Fighters is... fun, but have you tried any of the 3 (including SW Special) sequels? Darius Twin... well, have you tried Darius II/Sagaia, Darius Gaiden or G-Darius?

Just trying to help you expand past the SNES. :D

For me... this list will always change. Here are 5 of the shooters I often go back to:

-DoDonPachi
-Gradius Gaiden
-Sexy Parodius (and any other Parodius game)
-R-Type
-Blazing Lazers/Gunhed (or Final Soldier or Soldier Blade)

others I very often go back to:
-Thunder Force III
-Thunder Force IV/Lightening Force
-Gate of Thunder
-Lords of Thunder
-Raiden II
-Darius Gaiden
-Soukyugurentai
-Star Parodier
-Salamander/Life Force

Of course there are many more. I don't actually play Radiant Silvergun or Ikaruga that much. I also haven't really gotten much into the last couple generations of shooters (although I HAVE played quite a few (even Deathsmiles)! Just not multiple times).

it's really hard for me to chime in because I've been so into collecting and trying new shmups lately, so my list is likely to change next month and the month after and so on. I can tell you that Galaga, Castle of Shikigami 2 and Chaos Field would all probably be in there. That's probably my Top 3 right there, based solely on being the games that probably first sucked me into the genre to begin with. After that, I don't know. It's really hard. I've really enjoyed playing Gunbird lately. And I've also been pretty addicted to Gekioh/Shienryu.

@dunpeal, I'm just amazed you haven't played Shienryu. I really think you'd enjoy it man.

Shienryu is fun. It's also one of the cheaper shoot 'em ups on the Saturn. :)

NO WAY it should be that much. Really? I routinely saw it for $20-30 in Japan. Maybe $40 at MOST (and that is a total rip off!). $50-60 is quite a bit of mark up!!! If you pay that much for it, then someone is ripping you off nicely.

The PS1 and PS2 version are both in the $10-20 range in Japan. It's $6 on the Japanese PSN.

edit: I see Japan Game Stock is selling it for 4200yen ($50 I guess?). I'll guarantee you they paid maybe 1500-2000 for their copy they are selling, if not less. That's more than double mark up on a common game. There is a copy on Rakuten.co.jp for 2420yen (around $30) (http://item.rakuten.co.jp/surugaya-a-too-plus/143557-1/). That is much more reasonable. Even with a middleman service, it will be much cheaper than Japan Game Stock.

Yeah, I've been checking it out, and from what I've seen, average price is like $50.

I just showed you how to get it for $30-40. :)

Japamart (http://www.japamart.com/) is a middleman service. They'd charge an $8 service fee for Shienryu. So, if 2420yen is around $30, add $8 to it plus shipping. There, Shienryu for $38. STILL under $50 WITH shipping. Don't get ripped off.

I have played others such as:

Gradius V
G-Darius
Darius R
Gradius Galaxies
In The Hunt
Sagaia
Axelay
Darius Burst
Dimahoo
Gunlock
Dragon Blaze
Ikaruga

Some i discovered on this forum, but it's hard to play them without emulation due to the fact the consoles that alot of them are on, such as the Turbo CD are hard to get ahold of, or if its a Arcade only game, then i have to resort to MAME.

1. Xevious
2. Galactic Attack
3. Bosconian
4. Gradius III
5. Darius Gaiden/Space Invaders (1999)

I spent a lot of time with Namco Museum Vol. 1 as a kid. Wonder if I still have it...

Gotcha! I don't really play many arcade games, since I prefer to have actual hardware. I do recommend picking up a PC Engine Duo at some point. You can get a region modded one in the $250-300 range, which is a LOT cheaper than the US variant. Not exactly free, but now you know the price range.
