It's just PCI. I'm not a fan of the motherboard I've currently got anyway. When I first built this machine, the motherboard was fried when I got it, so I ended up in a month long battle trying to get it replaced, and even then it gave me trouble. Eventually I got it working, but...yeah.

So, I need a new motherboard. Hopefully my power supply will be ok, though it is time for a cleaning. I've currently got 1.5 gigs of ram, so I probably ought to upgrade that too. There's no way I'm getting away without dropping several hundred bucks on this...bloody hell.

That nVidia 8800GT doesn't sound too bad. I'm guessing it's the best for the price. Got a good motherboard recommendation?

What CPU have you got? You might be severely limited if it's like a socket A or a really old intel socket. If that's the case I usher you to this:

It's gonna be better for gaming performance if you just try and sell your old system and build an entirely new system. IF you're familiar with computer components then building is a piece of cake. It really is...

My CPU is an Intel Pentium D CPU 3.00 Ghz. Think I'm gonna need that Core 2 Duo?

You should be able to just change your motherboard to one with PCI-E pretty easily then. Just have a look and make sure you get the right socket for your CPU.

Be warned. If you have an OEM version of windows that it will unvalidate it. You will then need to buy another copy of windows or *ahem* validate it manually

I'm just glad I use OS X. No arcane activation and copy protection for me!
