A new documentary film that is called 100 Yen: The Japanese Arcade Experience. This film will cover the Japanese arcade scene including how the hell they're so good at those shmups (unlike myself)

Also, Mark of Classic Game Room interviews the producer/director of the film in a 3 part interview series at these links. (3rd part coming soon)

Part 1
Part 2

Here's the extensive trailer for anyone who is interested.

I simply cannot wait for this documentary! I just love the arcade scene and am very honored and delighted to have a significant arcade community in my neck of the woods!

I find it very sad how its true what they say about video gaming will never be accepted in America by something other than a time wasting hobby :? and if i ever did goto Japan to try and enjoy the Arcade culture i would be blown away by how good and passionate the gamers truly are over there.

I dont have any friends that are into Fighting or Shmups, so its hard to commit myself without someone by my side, when i see those Arcades full of people surrounding one Arcade machine, its just mind blowing! it's really true what the dude at the end of the trailer said about sitting at home isnt the same, and when the nearest Arcade is probably 100 miles away and even then it's nothing like it is in Japan.

Not a problem. It was just something I saw this morning and it makes *me* feel good that at least somewhere the arcade scene never truly died. I've lived and breathed arcades for nearly 30 years now and I live vicariously through them. That spirit will never die, even if I find some obscure cabinet in the unlikeliest of locations I would try to find a way to play them.

Youtube channels like Gamester81Arcade still give me hope that even though the American scene will never be half as vibrant and passionate as Japan is, that there are still places to go that respect and take care of their games. Where I live it's a big issue with maintenance on what seems to be a constant basis.

I also checked out that book that was linked here by Hazerd on Amazon, and it looks pretty solid to go with the film. Brian Ashcraft is also going to be in the documentary.
