I'm reinstalling S.T.A.L.K.E.R. I'm gonna try the Oblivion Lost mod. Anybody else get it, and if so, what did you think?

Haven't tried the mod, but the game itself is amazing. Modding it can only make it better (ex. gun selection, more inventory, etc).

My problem with STALKER is that I've never gotten it to run right. When it first released, dynamic lighting would crash my computer in an instant. Cutting it off, I found the game would run two hours before crashing on a good day. Reinstalling it, I've discovered it runs for all of five minutes. I'm thinking Memory Leak...which means I don't know how to fix it.

Fun.

Most modern graphics cards will play it flawlessly now. It's been patched to buggery so that it runs half decent.

I got it on day of release and sent it back because it would not run AT ALL.

I recently played it at my friends house and it run without a hitch on a 3870x2. Looked pretty good too.

Did some looking around on their forums to see what they said. Heh, turns out STALKER hates running on less than 2 gigs of ram. My 1.5 gig just isn't cutting it, apparently. Oh well, it's time I upgraded that and my video card anyway...

I was running 3GB (still am heh) and it refused to run on my Macbook Pro (yes i was using windows xp as well). I also had an x1600xt which should have been enough to run it on low settings. It wouldn't even do that. Just crashed out as soon as it tried loading the engine.

What architecture you on? AGP or PCI-E?

Ah Hell, I just took the time to check what card I've got and discovered my problem. I'd forgotten how old this bloody thing was, it's an ATI Radeon x1600. Time to upgrade...

So what's a good video card currently available on the market for relatively cheap? Somebody help me out here.

Yeah, is it PCI or PCI-express. And Yes, it does matter.

If you only have PCI, I suggest you upgrade your motherboard.

If you have PCI-E and want to upgrade your power supply (if it's old, you will have to) you can go top end and get an Radeon 4870X2 when it's released at the end of next month.

Or if you want the best bang for buck go for a Radeon 4850. They can be bought for about £105-125. Awesome card for the money.

If you can't quite stretch to that then you're gonna have to go for an nVidia 8800GT. That is around £80-100. Anything less than that isn't worth bothering with for S.T.A.L.K.E.R.
