So this is pretty rare to find: a free FPS with a single player campaign.
The campaign probably won't take you more than 2 hours to complete, but it does actually have one. The multiplayer component of this game is still in beta and that will be their main focus of future development, but for those of us that actually like the single player FPS experience, this one's got it and it won't cost you a penny.
It's an isometric action-RPG at it's core. Sort of Zelda like, but with an actual leveling system and EXP gaining. The weapons aren't very balanced (Get throwing ax, win game), the graphics are terrible, and the plot is probably all cliche's by now. But this game is so addictively fun with it's dark sense of humor and simple gameplay that I think a lot of people here will appreciate it. And to boot, the fan made 1.08 version comes with DinkEdit which allows you to create your own adventures using the DS engine with as much or as little creativity as you want. It also of course allows you to download and play many other peoples created stories that they upload to the Dink Network website. It's been a long time since I last played any, but I remember some truly breath taking moments come from that community.
Hope you enjoy.
I feel old when talking to anyone my age yet too inexperienced to effectively talk to anyone older. Life is grand that way.
MrEco, thanks for adding Dink Smallwood. It looks pretty good.
Here's another new one that just released.
Wing Commander Saga
This is a fan made sequel to the Wing Commander series designed on the FreeSpace 2 engine. It looks lovely and since you don't see many Space Sims these days, it's a welcome addition to a dormant genre.
This is a student project that has a bit of a creative spark to it. The game is a puzzle platformer with an interesting mechanic where you have to control a mirror image of yourself and then teleport your character to that mirror image in order to solve puzzles. The graphics have a both a childlike and somber quality to them and put the Unity engine to good use.
(And so you don't get immediately frustrated with this game like I did, you have to hold down and then push left [A] or right [D] to move blocks around. That's not explained anywhere in the game, nor is it intuitively obvious.)
This is a trippy game that has a gravity bending central mechanic. You have a device that lets you shift your gravitational pull to be directed towards any surface. The game has lovely visuals as you can see from the screenshot I took above and it is a treat to run around in the game's crazy topsy-turvy world.

This one is in beta right now. It has a very Playstation vibe to it. I don't even know exactly why that is. I think it must remind me of Twisted Metal or something. Anyway, give it a go. Or just watch this fun trailer for the game.
Vanguard Princess is impressive in every way. The graphics are fantastic with carefully detailed sprite work and excellent animations. The sound is great and includes voicework. And most importantly, it is a hell of a lot of fun with plenty of depth to keep you going. Oh yeah, and sexy anime babes, if that's your thing.
The fighting is fast with a lot of stuff going on at one time. Most of the moves are fairly easy to execute with standard SFII-style input commands. They lend nicely to chaining combos as well. Additionally, you have a side character that can help you fight from the sidelines, which adds a unique element to the game. All the side characters are little girls that run around in the background and can be pulled into the battle to aid in building combos.
If you only play one doujin fighting game, this should be it.
This game has been posted about on Racketboy in the past, but at the time it wouldn't just run on an English system. You had to add all this stuff to get your PC to understand the Japanese text. I remember I tried to do it awhile back and I put all this language changing software on my PC and for a brief second I almost got stuck in a Japanese setting where I couldn't read anything and I was scared I wouldn't be able to figure out how to turn it back to English. Thankfully, someone else has now taken care of that now and released this US Patched version of the game so you can just unpack the files and run the game without any worries. The patched version also includes LunaPort.exe, which makes it so you can play the game online. The image link above will lead you to a download for the patched version. You will need to change the file extension from '.exez' to '.exe' to run it.
Normally this thread on Shoryuken has extensive info about this game, but it appears to be down today. Though it was working yesterday, so I'm not sure what is up.
JT, I changed "exez" to "exe" and it unzipped, but gave me a folder full of files with the extension ".player" and that's it. No idea how to run this?
