The last time that I performed some plumbing work at my house, the seal on the "emergency" valve leading to our new sink broke - spraying me with scalding hot water. I tried to plug the hole with my hands while my then very pregnant wife sprinted to our basement/crawlspace to shut off the main line. Inevitably, this happened late in the day on Sunday - when both Home Depot and Lowes close early - so, we were faced with the prospect of not having any water on Monday morning. Fortunately - after 3 or 4 frantic trips to Home Depot - we were able to repair the pipe and properly affix a new "emergency" valve; so, we were not without water for that long. (
Lesson: Do your plumbing work on Saturday so that you have all day on Sunday to fix things if something goes terribly, terribly wrong.
Second Lesson: Although antique/custom plumbing parts may look really neat; you should not use them under any circumstances.)
In retrospect, I am glad that the valve - literally - flew off the pipe while we were at home. If it had happened while we were on vacation or otherwise away, there would have been water running out of our front door...
Anyway, good luck!!
