This is the kind of Whedon-fellation that I am talking about. It is an annoying attitude exhibited by much of his fanbase, many of whom refuse to admit that their views of his (extremely hit-and-miss work) are entirely subjective and that maybe, JUST MAYBE, his best stuff is good but not great. Even worse, they assume that anyone who disagrees with them must not know the genre in question very well, or otherwise they would CLEARLY SEE the masterful brilliance of Joss' work.

Bullshit.

I would guess that I have seen multiple episodes and/or entire runs of 66% or more of all the science-fiction TV series (that survived for more than a year or so) in the history of major network TV. For stuff set IN space, you can bump that to 75% or more. Whedon's Firefly was good, but it isn't the end-all be-all amazing OMG greatness that his rabid fanbase makes it out to be. I think that there are stretches of episodes in Battlestar Galactica (new), TNG, DS9, Babylon 5, and many other series that easily best Firefly. Maybe if Firefly had been renewed we would have had something more interesting and a better argument could be made that it is the "best EVA" but we didn't and, as is, it clearly isn't an obvious pick.

I enjoy Firefly and happily recommend it to people. I have it and Serenity on Blu-Ray and have watched them each twice through. It's very good for what it is, but there's not even enough there to start comparing it to those best sci-fi series in the history of TV.

I would agree that the majority of his fanbase goes a little overboard.

Yup. He is criminally overrated.

When did this happen? Star Wars day is supposed to be the same day as Towel day. You know, May 25th.

There is something to be said for originality, which characterizes all of Whedon's work. There is no other Sci Fi show like Firefly with its Sci Fi meets Western meets Chinese theme. The intro for the show didn't even resemble a Sci Fi show. In fact, Firefly predates some of Battlestar Galactica's ideas, like the camera techniques used in that show which are lifted from Firefly.

Whedon also has a way with dialog that other writers don't. You can recognize one of his shows because you can hear his "voice" in it. His shows also feature some of the strongest characterization and character arcs in television. He gets props for a reason, and other great works of geekdom are always making shout outs to his work, like BSG did

Battlestar Galactica

I think it would be interesting to see if you take Sci Fi out of the equation and see where people rank his shows in the world of fantasy and the supernatural, looking at shows like Buffy and Angel and compare them to modern hits like True Blood, Grimm, and Supernatural.

then, you would also have to see how he ranks in regards to pushing forward feminist ideas as well as LBGT ideas in television.

but really, anyone who wants to know why Whedon rocks can find some perspective here:

there's a reason why there are books and college discussions devoted to this guy

Well that all depends. I have been watching anime since the early 80s (real anime since the late 80s). I haven't seen anything in Whedon's work that wasn't already done over a decade before in an anime series.

I'm seriously not trying to start a pissing contest here, but I think a lot of people overlook this.

Ninja edit: And yeah, I was saying the same thing about the Wachowskis when the Matrix came out.
