Together Retro: Wolfenstein 3D

I will not be joining this month, but I have very fond memories of this game. When I much younger, my friend and I would play Wolf3D and its expansion - Spear of Destiny - on my 486. We would close the blinds and put our faces right next to the monitor so that it was like "virtual reality", which some of you may recall was a totally awesome concept in the '90s.

This month finally gives me the excuse I've been looking for to play Raven's Wolfenstein from 2009. It's such a fantastic game and I urge all of you to play it.

For the sake of simplicity I'll probably just pick up the Steam DOSBox version of the original game, although I can tell everybody here that the PSN port is probably the best from what I've seen.

I've only ever played a few hours of RTCW, but, I've put at least a few hundred into it's multiplayer stand-alone, Enemy Territory. Nobody really plays it anymore, but there are still a few matches going, and it's great fun.

I just got a free PSN card with GameStop points so console version will work for me. I also have fond memories of the original on my 486 but I don't do any kind of PC gaming any longer (I believe the last FPS for me on a PC was Quake II).

I have yet to play RTCW, but I have all the other versions. I will be starting with Wolf3D because that was the game that started it all for me. I was 7 or 8 when I first played it and I remember getting the floppies at a computer fair with my dad.

I'll have to check if I still have the disks somewhere otherwise it'll be DOSbox for me.

I remember playing this game once or twice, but only for a couple of minutes each time. RTCW was where the series truly began for me, I played it at a time when I was being introduced to FPS in general and pc gaming, so it'll always have a place in my heart. The console ports have a couple of extra levels, though, so those versions might be worth a try, even though I consider it a somewhat hard game to play with a controller. Wolfenstein 2009 wasn't bad, had some fun with it, but I think it was a somewhat half-assed production, not the big release the franchised deserved. Still, worth a try.

Anyway, I'm probably going with the PS3 version for Wolf3D, I'll report back when I try it

I'll be playing the original DOS version that I bought off of 3D Realms six or seven years ago. Wolf3D was the first game I ever got into mods on. So many good memories. If you want more Wolf3D after you finish the game, make sure to check out Spear of Destiny and the excellent free mod, Spear End of Destiny.

Virtual Reality seemed so cool back then that technology might have well have just stopped once we got there. No point in inventing anything after something that cool.

But why? It's not just unpopular, it's objectively the worst. It's only 5 bucks on Steam and it'll run on anything! :S
