Admittedly I preferred Warcraft and Warcraft 2 to Starcraft, but I like my orcs and trolls.

As for Diablo, you are likely hearing more about Diablo 2 than the original. That's not to say that the original isn't a solid action RPG (it's a great game that is simple but addictive), but the sequel expanded on it significantly. There have been some solid western action RPGs since then, such as DungeonSiege, but they have never quite been able to capture that share of the market entirely from Blizzard.

Nox, Titan Quest, and Torchlight come to mind. Dungeon Siege to a point.

Torchlight was actually created by some of the folks who created Diablo, and is kind of a "back to basics" example of the gameplay, despite lacking the multiplayer that helped the Diablo series become so popular. Torchlight II will have it though.

There's also Magicka, Fate, Path of Exile, Sacred, Loki: Heroes of Mythology, Mythos, Throne of Darkness, Record of Lodoss War, and more.

Prince of Qin - Diablo in China
Harbinger - Diablo in space
Darkstone - The first Diablo in 3D

Most of the imitators aren't as good and refined as Diablo, but many are worth your time if you enjoy the type of gameplay and looting.

Torchlight 1 and 2. You can preorder 2 on steam for $20 and get the first one for free. Titan Quest/Immortal Throne are $20 as well together. Magicka is similar in gameplay style, but there's no loot aspect. It's $10 on steam, or $24 with a boatload of DLC.

Magicka is only fun as a douchebag friend simulator (but it's great for that)

actually torchlight was one of the games I was looking forward to play.

but did Blizzard innovate this type of gameplay, or was there similar games before Diablo?
and what genre is it categorized in?
