I think you need to develop a more imposing demeanor. Or get headphones that don't leak noise to everyone in a 10-foot radius. Half the appeal of metal is that I'd rather not be talking to these people anyways.

Its reallllly odd. People dont' like me. The way my face naturally sits, I look mad. The music wasn't blaring, that's against school rules, but I have the ability to make it loud enough to not here. I guess she could hear it walking by, but it freaked me the fuck out.

Just not that lucky... /music quote that makes no sense in a metal thread

Who likes that screamy stuff? Wait, YOU like that screamy stuff?" Never mind that I was at the top of the class. I was now a pathetic, hateful excuse for a musician.

"Yeah. I play a lot of death metal. And jazz, flamenco, classic rock, traditional Japanese-"

"METAL IS UNACCEPTABLE."

Oh really? I'm sorry I'm not playing John Phillip Sousa on guitar. See, it would be a pain to change from Drop-C...

I hear ya.

On a more general note I hate getting the "So... what kind of music do you like?" question. I could respond honestly and say "I like atmospheric black metal, Swedish death metal, 90s European death/doom metal, DIY hardcore, emocore/screamo, crust, shoegaze, industrial, neofolk, ambient music, and political grindcore" but I'd be greeted with bunch of blank stares. Or people telling me I was weird.

My wife asked me that very question when we first met and I think I said, "Durrrr...... all kinds of stuff!"

It's definitely awkward. I hate the question myself.

lol. That's totally me and my wife. We could both answer "Metal" to the quetion, but we still can't listen to the same artists, most of the time.

Usually when I'm asked about my taste in music (unless I'm at a concert) I just say "Heavy Metal" and leave it at that.

Right guys, I'm looking for suggestions... DUN DUN DUUUUUN!!

So... what I know I like- melodic death metal, Eluveite styled folk metal, classic metal, and metal with beauty and the best lyrics. Otherwise, I have no freaking idea. I want to avoid anything too screamy, I'm leaning more towards clean lyrics or Amon Amarth style. I know way too many bands that I've tried listening to that I don't understand. Thorr's Hammer is good, but I'll be damned if I can understand a single word of doom styled Norwegian...

Here's what works for me

Melodeath

Kalmah
In Flames (their older albums)
Dethklok (I love the original Dethalbum)
Dark Tranquillity
Eternal Tears of Sorrow

Beauty and the beast

Nightwish(Though it's debatable if Marco Hietala's vocals are in the "beast" category)
Delain
Sirenia (try their older stuff, their last album sucked)
Epica (They just had a new album out this year. They probably do this style better than anyone now I'd say)
Ayreon (they actually have a TON of different vocalists and vocal styles. Try The Human Equation and 01011001)
Leaves Eyes (They do this style on practically every song)
Try this Cradle of Filth song
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6dW6aNAZGTM

Eluveitie style Folk

Maybe Leaves Eyes Meredead album, it's very folkish.

Alright, I'll look into those when I have time. I have a couple of friends into In Flames, so I already have an idea about it.

Understanding lyrics is so overrated.
