Japanese Sonic 3 with American Sonic and Knuckles?

Just curious, what would happen if I locked a Japanese copy of Sonic 3 onto an American copy of Sonic and Knuckles? Would the game even work? At least the refresh rate would be the same anyway.

depends is s3 is region locked and if s/k usa is coded differently than s/k j.

I could try testing it for you, I have a Japanese copy of Sonic 3 and my brother has Sonic & Knuckles so I'll give it a try.

Awesome, thanks for that! Any odd peculiarities when doing this? I know when you run Sonic 3 in English, Tails is called, well, "Tails", while he's "Miles" when the game is set to Japanese. Which script is being used in the case of locking a Japanese copy of Sonic 3 onto an English copy of Sonic and Knuckles? And just an atheistic question, what did this setup look like? I know Japanese carts are a different shape from American carts, I would have figured there would be parts of the Japanese Sonic 3 over-hanging the American Sonic and Knuckles cart.

Okay, that's neat. Now the question is are there any significant gameplay, music, or design changes between the American and JP versions of Sonic 3? As I understand, the lock on technology took Sonic and Knuckles code and simply patched Sonic 3.

There is the possibility that something neat could come out of this.
