Nexon Offers To Buy EA

Post by lisalover1 »

In a move that seemingly came out of nowhere and smacks of either great opportunism or laughable hubris, Japanese Free-To-Play MMO developer Nexon has put an offer on the table to buy developer/publisher Electronic Arts. While I am 90% sure that this will never go anywhere, it is quite a curious development. What would change in the game industry if (arguably) the biggest, most feared, and most prolific game studio in the west was bought out by an up-and-coming Japanese development house? It's something to ponder, that's for sure. Which leads me to the next question: Where in the hell did Nexon get enough money to try and buy EA? I knew they were doing good, but not THAT good. Maybe they're just in way over their head with a company they know nothing about. Either way, it is exciting to see something completely unexpected happen in the industry.

They are technically South Korean, not Japanese.

Yeaaaahhh that's what I was wondering. EA buys developers, not the other way around!

Nexon has a larger market capitalization than EA. In any case, they also could use leverage to raise funds if they were looking for a straight cash buyout, or possibly work out a cash-and-stock deal.

Personally though, I don't think this acquisition makes sense for Nexon.

EA's market cap is pretty small right now. Their stock is at an all-time low also so you may see the roles reversed, which I agree is odd considering EA's past.

Nexon probably just sees potential in EA's IPs. Not sure how they'd take advantage of them. ME or DA MMO? More online NFS games? Maybe Nexon just seems them as a cheap deal seeing how much EA's stock has dropped over the last while. It's hard for me to wrap my head around such a setup since the two companies seem like such strange bedfellows.

As much as EA could stand to improve, I don't think Nexus are the ones for the job. They just make rather average MMOs, right? If I had to see EA eaten up by another company, I'd prefer Valve or 2K.

Oh man, if Valve were to acquire EA I think the universe may implode in a fit of joy, shock, and confusion.

That really would be the greatest thing ever. I guess it would be a bit of karmic revenge for the awful PS3 port of The Orange Box!
