I can watch a good enough orator talk for an infinite amount of time. This was fascinating, and it wasn't even anything particularly new to me.

I learned this lesson the hard way. Without going into details, I will say that I was once visited by the police. I invited them into my home and told them nothing but the innocent truth. They were able to use what I said to arrest me. Luckily I was only held for four hours and released without bail. The charges were eventually dropped, but not until I wasted the time going to court twice.

If I had not allowed them into my home and simply said that I would not talk to them, the entire interaction would have likely lasted two minutes and been forgotten. Never again will I say anything, even if it is just for a traffic stop.

I recently practiced silence at a traffic stop, and for some reason it caused a fuss over at the Smile/Ticked thread. Like in any negotiation, usually the best thing to do is to say nothing. That or "Nuh-uh" or "I just want to buy some cheese. I'm making a Pizza!".

I've always been told to remember "whatever you say can and will be used against you". If that doesn't tell you to shut up, I don't know what else will.
