Travel cases for 360, Saturn, other systems

Post by Space Paranoids »

I tend to move my consoles around fairly often (friends' houses, vacation, etc.), but I haven't really found a good solution for carrying them. I used to put my Saturn or 360 in a duffle bag, but it would be nice to have it (and my Xbox) in something that keeps it better protected, has more compartments, etc. I have a traveling case for my Gamecube, but haven't been able to find much for Saturns.
Has anyone found traveling cases that they would recommend for Saturn, 360, or consoles in general? There are a few 360 bags on Amazon, but they either have lots of bad reviews or are sold out. Thanks!

Maybe something like a Pelican Case? I made one for my Game Boy Advance back in the day for vacations. They're watertight and nigh indestructible, and it comes with a solid piece of foam for you to cut out your own protection.

Annoyingly, Amazon doesn't post the dimensions of some of these boxes, so make sure you do your research and make sure everything fits. I always have a bunch of corrugated plastic mail totes in my car for my job, so I just use those whenever I need to carry more than my arms can hold.

It's not much for compartments, but I have an old typewriter case lined with foam that I lug consoles around in when I need to. They're hard shelled and super durable since they're made for something arguably much more fragile than a console.

Those look pretty sweet, if a little pricey.
Oh, one other question I wanted to ask: part of the reason I'm asking about travel cases is because I'm traveling by air to a summer internship. Does anyone know a way to pack consoles in checked luggage that they trust, or do most people use a travel case as their carry-on? For my money, I'd probably trust a Pelican-type case to get through checked without breaking anything, but I don't know if I'd trust anything less.

If you've got hard-case luggage then a console should be fine, especially if it's packed in clothes.

Go to most any camera or pro audio store and look for used travel cases. They may be called flight cases, road cases, or rumble cases. Anvil and Pelican are the best, but even the lesser known brands are fine (a briefcase style one should run you $20-50. It does cost more, but they will last forever - I have an anvil case that my father bought in the early 70s that is still good. You might have to clean them up, and possibly refoam (which is not cheap), but they are amazing cases.

Heres one on ebay that is an Olympus:

From a company I have bought from several times (mostly because they are in Atlanta).

FWIW I wouldn't trust any electronics in checked luggage. Remember that you can only use 'approved' locks that the TSA can open or they're allowed to cut the lock off if 'needed'. The TSA is full of crooks as much at the baggage handlers and the rest of the world.

If it is in my carry on, then it is under or above the seat and near me the whole time where I can keep track of it.
