Convince me I to buy a ColecoVision

Post by Curlypaul »

I've been looking at getting an Atari 2600 lately but a friend of mine is offering to sell me a ColecoVision. He's emmigrating and as he's been clearing out his house he noticed that he had 4 of the things, I might be able to get one for a nice price.

Here is what I've been thinking:

2600
+Large Library of cheap games
+Games easy for me to find
+Iconic console
+Large online fanbase
-I can get a cheap 2600 anytime

Coleco
+ I should be able to get it cheaper than normal as its from a mate
+ Technically, the games are way better than anything else at the time
- The games are harder to find (~80 on ebay.co.uk)
- The games are often x10 the price of the Atari version

I'm not sure exactly what my mate is offering, he needs to look at the condition of the consoles and check how many controller and games he's willing to part with.

Any reason not to get both?

I'd probably go with a 2600 personally, it'll be easier to build up a collection for it.

Eventually, yes, but atm I've only got the funds for one or the other. I'm leaning toward the Coleco as it might be a good buy from my mate, but the games are like £20 each for the good titles which is putting me off a little.

But then the games are so much better, the DK port is excellent, Zaxxon, Ladybug, Q*bert etc all seem to be great games.

Are the controllers easy to repair? I know that there are parts available for various 2600 controllers but not found that many guides for the ColecoVision controllers yet, and I've not seen anybody selling properiety parts for them either.

Why not get a ColecoVision and then get the 2600 adapter? It gives you the best of both worlds and you don't need extra cords.

That had crossed my mind as well. Do games play perfectly on the 2600 extension or are they some compatibility issues?

The 2600 adapter is pretty much a normal 2600 that depends on the CV for AV and power, there aren't any compatibility problems AFAIK.

If you think you will get both machines eventually it does not matter but the Colecovision is harder to find so obtain this first as the Atari 2600 accessories and games are easier to come by
I love the Atari 2600 it was my first machine (after tabletop and lcd games) and so has a place in my heart and the Coleco was the console i wanted but could never afford so i like both machines.
