Clear Game Cases

I think there's a thread about this somewhere else, but I can't find it, and with common words like "game" and "case," the Search function is useless, so I figured I'd just make another one.

I've seen these blank, clear, plastic game cases online, and I've seen pictures where people use them for cartridge games, but I had a few questions about them. Here's a link to the page I've been looking at.

I have two main questions. What types of game cartridges don't these cases support? It doesn't say anything about NES, Master System, 32x, or Atari 2600 cartridges, so would they not fit in? Also, does it have a cover on the front (like a DVD case) to let me slip in printed off cover art?

If there's a better universal game case out there, someone please let me know.

You might notice that they're $1-something on this site, and about 50 cents on other sites. When they're about 50 cents, it's because you're buying them in bulk (usually 100). And you have to pay shipping on that. I got a quote once from this site...

I think it was about $35 if I remember correctly (from CA to NY) but it might have been more. So consider that. If you need 100 cases, it's the way to go. But don't think they're 50 cents each, they'll be closer to a dollar each after shipping.

A lot of people like to split the orders. I almost split an order with some one from here once, but we lost interest in getting them (but that's the reason I got a shipping quote). If you need something like 50 or 100 cases, it's worth it to order them in bulk. You can always try and split the order with some one (either 50/50 or something like 75/25 or whatever you want). If you buy 100 for yourself and end up having a few left over, they should be easy to get rid of on the forum's BST. But if you only want a few cases, it be easier to just buy them from Racket.

You might wanna check out The Cover Project forums. I've read a few times that the Universal Game Cases have to be slightly modified to accommodate a NES cart. Here's the thing: Pretty much any cart will fit inside (maybe not NeoGeo though). It has the peg spacing to securely hold SNES, N64, Genesis, etc. I assume to modify it for NES carts you have to cut some pegs out. That being the case, you can really make it hold any cart you want, you might just have to cut some pegs out to make it fit or whatever.

As for the sleeve like a DVD case, yes, they have that.

I got two cases of these for my collection. The way they work is there are four corner posts of plastic that fit a variety of games. They can comfortably fit SNES, Genesis, 32x, Master System, and N64 carts. I believe they would also fit Famicom carts, but I don't have any to test. They also have a slot that allows you to slip a CD in there (though you're better off using a DVD case for that). If you want to fit NES carts you can take a dremel and saw off those four corner posts. There will be a small amount of rattling but no different than the small amount you get with any of the aforementioned carts (it's not a snug fit like a native Genesis clamshell). Note that the Super Game Boy is far too thick to fit in even with removing the four corners, and the Sonic & Knuckles cart is just a little too thick; it leads to a bulge but the case still closes just fine.

As mentioned, they have a sleeve for your cover insert. You can find a ton of covers on the cover project; it's what I've used for my collection. I need to catch up; it's been several months and I still have several blank cases.

Some stuff worth knowing:

Master System, Genesis, and I assume 32x all fit, though it's rather loose for them.

Atari 2600 should fit no problem.

Modding for NES isn't that hard, and the same mod can be done to fit a Super Game Boy.

I have a bunch of them, strongly considering selling them off as I don't really want to spend all this time constantly making new covers and getting stuff printed.

Yeah, I thought about doing this because it looks so much nicer, but it would take a LOT of time to modify enough of those to fit my NES needs, and I don't even want to think about how much it would cost in printer ink to print off two or three hundred covers after I bought all the cases....Maybe in the future when I have a decent paying career, but definitely not now...

If you have an inkjet printer, then don't even think about it! I got a few covers printed up from FedEx Kinkos last year for the Charity Auction. They came out amazing, but they were $1.25 each. So if you needed 250 covers, that would be over $300! If you have your own color laser printer, or you ever wanted to invest in one, it would be your most money friendly option.

Yeah, I have an inkjet and it's been quite expensive. I think I've gone through 4-5 refills in the course of doing my collection (DVD and UGC).
