But most Nintendo games change things up in every sequel/iteration in drastic ways and people love them for it.
Sega tried to do similar things and some of the crazy new ideas were absolutely great. (Every new sonic game does something different, even the old ones)
I think people are more angry at the fundamental changes, like making sonic not about going fast or something. And I'm not arguing against that at all. I think if you're not true to some franchise, then there's no point in making it a sequel to that franchise ... then you're just using the name for marketing.
.
Giving spin dash to Sonic or making the guns in Ratchet and Clank level up as you use them is a bit different thing than my examples.

And Secret Rings is like $4. It's worth a try at the very least.
39 euros for a new copy and used copies ranging between 22 and 25 euros where I live. The UK ebay seems to be a bit cheaper, maybe 7 to 12 pounds a copy but most wont ship outside the UK. Sure I would buy a lot of current gen not so great games if I could get them for 3 euros but 20-35 is a too big investment in my current financial situation.

I Think Generations is the best 3D sonic so far because to be honest I don't really like the 3D sonic games that came out before it. Sonic Adventure was cool when it came out but it definitely starting to show its age same story for sonic adventure 2. I hated sonic Heroes on the Ps2(I have heard the GC version is a bit better) and Sonic 06, I did not even bother with Secret rings or Black knight because they both looked like waggle-fests. I have yet to play unleashed or colors. Generations was the first 3D sonic game that I really enjoyed since the first Adventure game.

You should try Colors before making a "best" claim. I get the feeling that most people skipped that game, but it was a solid effort and is still worth playing.

I actually really want to play Colors. Its one of those games that I've been meaning to get for the longest time.

Think of it as a less boost happy version of the Modern Sonic stages, and with the wisp system from Planet Wisp in Generations, except with a lot more kinds of wisps.
Is that a 3DS XL in your pocket, or are you just glad to see me? ~ZeroAX

I want to buy Colors buy I've got to say that I hated the Colors stages in Generations. The modern Sonic version of it was my least favorite 3D sonic level and the classic Sonic version of it was on a shared second place for the title of worst 2D level with the latter half of the Crisis city level. Mostly the sprouting lava and windy part made it really annoying.
Are the wisps as annoying as in Generations? The forest part of Planet Wisp looked gorgeous. Too bad you were stuck in that boring dull POS factory for 80% of the level! It would have been a great level w/o wisps and the factory parts

Wisps are a lot less annoying when they're more spaced out and have a lot more variety. As for the bland factory, the game has an overall "technology impeding upon nature" theme to it, however it's much more balanced than the 15 seconds of nature before six minutes of factory from Generations. It also mixes the two together much more fluidly. Example screenshot of the original Planet Wisp:
