Same boat here. Turning 31, played mostly RPG's since the NES age. For me, the SNES was probably the best time as an RPGer and a not too far off second would be the PS1. You didn't mention a specific console, so I'll list what I've played:disorderlyvision wrote:I have been playing rpg's for quite awhile and have beaten several. Most of the common ones (snes, genesis, n64 (barely any I know), ps1, ps2, xbox.....Opa Opa wrote:Are there any specific consoles that you're looking to play on? That'll help narrow things down a bit.
I did enjoy PDS, I thought it was too short though. I remember beating it in somewhere around 20 hours.ninjainspandex wrote:Panzer dragoon saga my favorite rpg i found the main character to be quite cool
I tried one in the series but I didn't put much time into it. i may have to look into them some more.sabrage wrote:I almost hesitate to recommend Shin Megami Tensai... Maybe the Devil Summoner series?
is it strategy or turn based? I'm not much into the strategy ones, mainly because I suck at them.Gamerforlife wrote:Jeanne D'Arc is another great one that plays with history a bit. Good story with good, strong, and independant female characters.
of the DQ games i've played I couldn't get into them because they seemed like a grind fest. is there one in particular you recomend, or maybe one that's not so heavy on grinding/dungeon crawling?Nemoide wrote:I think the Dragon Quest series is the epitome of how fun a JRPG can be and have totally non-emo stories/characters.
I actually just picked up Knights for the xbox. So I'm planning on giving that a go. I thought fallout was a fps? might have to look into it too.Menegrothx wrote:Because JRPGs are the only kind of RPGs there are. You would find plenty of choiches if you were willing to try out PC RPGs. There are plenty of 1990s/early 2000s RPGs that run on any modern computer.
Knights of the Old Republic, Dark Souls and Demon's Souls, Dragon Age and the newer Fallout games might be good games to start on, all of them can be found on consoles.
Unfortunately i dont have $150 to spend right now. I'm not a huge fan of playing on emulators it just feels weird playing old games on my modded xbox controller. i have little hope of finding earthbound cheap in the wild so i will probably break down eventually and play a rom.BoringSupreez wrote:There's no emo crap in Earthbound. And you don't even play a teen, the characters are mainly kids.
With all the talk of Earthbound here lately, I'm surprised I'm the first to mention it.
which console? I've never heard of this game.sabrage wrote:How has Nier not been mentioned yet?! It's the quintessential "play as an ugly old dude" for consoles (and lo, it was highly praised for its story)
BoneSnapDeez wrote:Hyperdimension Neptunia. You don't play as 14 year old emo boys, you play as 14 year old girls with big boobs.
Western rpg's are more grindy and dungeon crawly than jrpg's or is that just a misconception i have? To be honest i haven't played many western rpgs at allAny Western RPG is darker and less "emo" than the majority of JRPGs but you probably already know that...
This is one I have never got around to trying. i think I will check it out, thanks.Valkyrie-Favor wrote:As always, I will recommend Valkyrie Profile. You play as Lenneth Valkyrie, one of the three sisters of fate, whose job it is to claim the souls of fallen warriors and train them for service in Valhalla. She doesn't talk much, and when she does, she's either being hilariously deadpan or damning a defiler of souls to Nifelheim.
I did enjoy the first Suikoden quite a bit, but never played any of the others for whatever reason. might give some of those a go. just played tales of phantasia, planning on checking out a couple of the tales games. I played quite a few on the ps1 that was my main rpg era. thanks for the list though, I will look up some of the ones i haven't played and see if they interest me.TrevorF wrote:Same boat here. I just bought Tales of Phantasia for SFC and GBA for my collection. Unfortunately I need a few more Japanese lessons, so it's looking like GBA is going to be first.disorderlyvision wrote:I did enjoy the first Suikoden quite a bit, but never played any of the others for whatever reason. might give some of those a go. just played tales of phantasia, planning on checking out a couple of the tales games. DQVI for the DS is probably the best bet; I remember the grinding being fairly minimal. (For me it was mostly at the end because I made some mistakes with selecting character classes needed to unlock the "Hero" class.) The most fun aspect of the game for me was constantly exploring new areas and making changes between two worlds.disorderlyvision wrote:of the DQ games i've played I couldn't get into them because they seemed like a grind fest. is there one in particular you recomend, or maybe one that's not so heavy on grinding/dungeon crawling?Nemoide wrote:I think the Dragon Quest series is the epitome of how fun a JRPG can be and have totally non-emo stories/characters.
Yes, combat is FPS rather than turn based. It still is a RPG nonetheless. Not as much as Fallout 1&2, but 3&NV still classify as action RPGs. Fallout 2 is one of the best RPGs of all times so its highly recommended that you try it even though it's on PC.disorderlyvision wrote: I thought fallout was a fps? might have to look into it too.
You are aware that you can buy a USB SNES controller for like 10-15 dollars, right?disorderlyvision wrote: Unfortunately i dont have $150 to spend right now. I'm not a huge fan of playing on emulators it just feels weird playing old games on my modded xbox controller
Not really. It's more like that Western RPGs are more complex and can be hard to get into/unforgiving, while JRPGs are easier to get into but often have a lot of grinding/random encounters. WRPGs tend to be open and give the player a lot of freedom while JRPGs usually are more linear and focus on storyline. It naturally depends on which era of WRPGs and JRPGs you are talking about and what kind.disorderlyvision wrote: Western rpg's are more grindy and dungeon crawly than jrpg's or is that just a misconception i have?
