N64 PAL problem

Post by Meldarion »

When I connected my Pal N64 via composite cable to my HDTV the colours came out ridiculously bright and no amount of adjusting the settings could fix the problem.

I was prepared for the games to look bad, but this is clearly something else entirely. Any insight into this issue would be much appreciated.

First off is it a quality cable? The first one that I bought was a cheap chinese cable and the colours were all washed out to the point that most games were unplayable. Switching to a better cable solved the problem for me.

If its not the quality of the cable thats a problem, maybe the caps are going on the board.

I can't remember the origins of the cable it was a while ago. It's a good a place as any to start, so I'll order another. Thank you for the help.

Does the N64 support RGB scart at all? I can't stand the image you get from composite anymore and like to at least have scart for all my consoles. I have composite on N64 too though, so I guess it probably doesn't support RGB scart.

But yeah, sounds like it could be a poor lead, or a fault of some sort. It shouldn't look that bad.

I don't think that it does, they really screwed up the PAL version of the console. There are some RGB mods for NTSC consoles on http://www.mmmonkey.co.uk/

The NTSC versions have much better video output anyway. If I hadn't already bought a load of PAL games when I found this out I would have a got an NTSC console myself. I might just yet.

Yeah I'd recommend steering well clear of the PAL console, was a mess.

Yeah same. I wish I had stayed away from the PAL console. Oh well.
