RPG's where you are not a 14 year old emo?

Post by disorderlyvision »

I have been playing rpg's for quite awhile and have beaten several. As I grow older (about to turn 31) I find it a lot harder to get into the games because of the characters. Are there any console rpg's geared towards a more adult audience?

Are there any specific consoles that you're looking to play on? That'll help narrow things down a bit.

I'm generalizing here but

Japanese rpgs equal 14 year old emos

Western rpgs equal adult characters for adult gamers

There are exceptions of course, but that's a good general rule.

I almost hesitate to recommend Shin Megami Tensai... Maybe the Devil Summoner series?

Try Valkyria Chronicles, if you can enjoy strategy rpgs. The characters are young but very likable. These are kids fighting in a war to save their homes. That's easy for any adult to get into and appreciate I think. The game is sort of an altered take on one of our history's real life wars. It even touches on some nice issues like racism

Jeanne D'Arc is another great one that plays with history a bit. Good story with good, strong, and independant female characters.

As always, I will recommend Valkyrie Profile. You play as Lenneth Valkyrie, one of the three sisters of fate, whose job it is to claim the souls of fallen warriors and train them for service in Valhalla. She doesn't talk much, and when she does, she's either being hilariously deadpan or damning a defiler of souls to Nifelheim.

Because JRPGs are the only kind of RPGs there are. You would find plenty of choiches if you were willing to try out PC RPGs. There are plenty of 1990s/early 2000s RPGs that run on any modern computer.
Knights of the Old Republic, Dark Souls and Demon's Souls, Dragon Age and the newer Fallout games might be good games to start on, all of them can be found on consoles.

I think the Dragon Quest series is the epitome of how fun a JRPG can be and have totally non-emo stories/characters.
