Can you swim? (And what country are you from?)

I took some summer training thing back when I was pretty young, learned how to do it properly and whatnot. From the USA.

I completely hated swimming in jr. high / high school though. Always have had kind of low stamina issues, and swimming completely takes it out of you... we'd do laps around the pool or swim back and forth and I always felt like I was going to die.

Isn't that quite obivous?

^Actually, the amount of pools and lakes in West and North Texas are extremely large compared to what you would think. It's quite odd.

Isnt Houston located right next to the sea? I doubt there are that many lakes or rivers in the Chihuahuan desert when compared to the humid east Texas?

I live in Abilene, which is pretty close to the center of Texas there. We've got a couple of good sized lakes.

United States. Live in Florida and have my whole life. Learned how to swim back in pre-school, almost everyone I know swims, has a pool, or lives near some body of water.

Chuahuan desert isn't in Texas. The farthest west side touches a bit of the Nevada, and we might have a tiny bit of the Chihuahuan desert in southern Texas, but west Texas isn't exactly desert. It has a decent amount of greenery, and lakes aren't all that uncommon.

I just always thought it was weird that no one out there ever wants to go. In my area, everyone's jumping to go.

In high school I swam and worked as a lifeguard and swim instructor at the local pool. In college I coached the youth swim team and eventually the high school swim team for over 12 years. Also in college I trained all of the lifeguards and swim lesson instructors in my county and managed the local pool/fitness center.
Swimming has always been part of my life, but working in the aquatics field for over 12 years you would be surprised on who can and cant swim. Almost everything mentioned like about not having access to pools is true, except in my area until 2000 most every low economic (government funded housing) areas had city pools free of charge for community residents. These pools ranged from wading pools to full Olympic size ones with high dives. In my area it was those kids who had two working parents (sometimes wealthy sometimes not) that didn't know how to swim since they never really had the opportunity, or adult to take them, to swim at the community pools.
