He did the screenplay for Toy Story back in 1995. Hollywood admires the guy to no end and he's been working in moves for decades.
If anything it's the fact that "Joss Whedon" is finally becoming a household name.
Also, two mega-hit shows that lasted 7 seasons or so a piece I think gives him enough credentials for this, especially since both of those shows (Buffy & Angel) are genre shows.
