wait, what??? The JPN PS2 release has Layer Section?! I need to get that then! Wow.

...also, is it weird that I like G Darius way more than Darius Gaiden? When I got Taito Legends back in like 2008 I wasn't even a shmup fan, but still found G Darius to be super impressive looking and quite fun.

I'm not overly fond of Darius Gaiden either, though I can't speak for G Darius.

I got the DLC for Jamestown the other day and i tried to grind out some Challenge mode because the harder difficulties scare me. One of my Steam friends has mindblowingly high scores in the hardest difficulty and I severely doubt I'll ever come close to them. That game beats my ass to a pulp.

I've always wanted to try Jamestown, never had the chance though.

G Darius just has that uniqueness that pulls you in, whereas Darius Gaiden is a straightforward classic shooter. As far as classic shooters go, I think Gaiden is one of the finest, but when I first started shmupping, G Darius stood out to me too, mostly for the ability to capture any enemy I saw and turn it into a powerup.

I love different types of powerups.

I played some Gunbird and Vapor Trail on the Cab, as well as some Gradius IV on the ps2 last night. Only one run of each sadly. Quite surprised how much fun I am having wth Gradius IV.

Grabbing the different enemies to see what kind of powerups they give you was always a load of fun. Like you said, not the bst of the bunch, but unique enough to come back to every now and then.
Yeah, that's probably my favorite part, experimenting with the power-ups. That, and the branching pathways you can take are pretty neat too. :)

Oh yes, my favorite part of the entire Darius series is their branching paths. Gaiden has a ridiculous amount of paths!

I've always wanted to try Darius II in the arcade, with its 3-screen wide setup. Now that would be epic!

It's great if you're a Compile fan

*no jabs, honest*

Not to mention the sweet graphics and sound. The F3 System shines.

Isn't that what we all want?

Ha ha, to be fair, I do think Compile is the best console shmup developer. They really knew how to push a system to its limits, with really fast moving, insanely detailed sprites.

My only issue with compile is the difficulty. I spent months tracking down MUSHA. I 1cc'd MUSHA on my 2nd attempt, which made me sad. Its like... 9 fairly long stages, and if I know I am going to clear it... why play it again?

So, I tracked down Gun Nac, as it looked great. it was... but it was also 9 pretty long stages, and I got the 1cc in my first time ever playing the game.

So, I tried GG Aleste via a Game Gear emulator... 1cc on my first try.

Zanac Neo... 1cc on my 2nd credit.

I do want to try Space Megaforce still... but I am just Cave-spoiled. Most Cave shooters have 5 stages, and I usually can't get through those 5 stages, so I am used to 20 minute runs, not hour long runs.

I think 1cc runs in Compile games are less of a benchmark than they are in stuff by most other developers (e.g. Cave or Psykio). In Compile games the focus is almost exclusively on score - advancement is almost an afterthought or a given once you achieve a certain familiarity/skill level. One of the reasons I can keep going back to Cave games is because I can play then in a way that ignores score and just tries to reduce the amount of credits it takes me to complete a run: 1ccs are fucking hard. I find playing purely for survival to be a lot of fun - often more fun than score attack...
