Re: Random Thoughts Thread
most retro games in HD are just kinda sloppily upscaled using ugly algorithms like 2xSai.
Now if they use like, fake scanlines and stuff or completely redone art it can look pretty nice.
3D stuff pretty much always looks better in HD, save for the HUDs (which should really be redone if you do the HD thing anyway). No more jaggies or pixelation on the 3D models themselves, etc. Sure, they botch it sometimes (ugh Silent Hill) but those are exceptions here.
One thing that would be cool to me would be an HD remake of Donkey Kong Country, using re-renders of the original models used to make the sprites. You'd literally have the exact same game, only a thousand times clearer and in hi-res.

Now that would certainly be interesting to see. I'm not sure if it would turn out all that great looking, but it would be interesting.AppleQueso wrote: One thing that would be cool to me would be an HD remake of Donkey Kong Country, using re-renders of the original models used to make the sprites. I wonder if modern consoles could just render those models in real-time?
Then you'd get a 2.5d DKC remake that would probably look nice too.

Yes. Phong shading ain't no thang anymore. We have complex real-time global illumination lighting algorithms running in real-time now (see Crysis 2)
I don't know if you could use the exact same models, though, they lightly had a very high polygon count or weren't polygonal at all (splines). However, you could make it look the same but real-time rendered, for sure.

Re: Random Thoughts Thread
So I found another one of those HDCRTs, and hopefully I'll actually get to this one first.
Normally I wouldn't want one of these, but I'd really like to just have one TV for when I move out. While it's not as great for retro stuff as a real SD-TV is, from my friends set I can see it's better than the plasma I could take, and the picture quality for HD stuff is fantastic as well, if not quite as sharp. I tried to get him to sell me his set, but he likes it too much.
I know it's giant, but, I don't quite understand most complaints about size. Do people really move their TVs around that much to where it's a problem?

Re: Random Thoughts Thread
I wish that gaming sites besides Rock, Paper, Shotgun and the occasional Kotaku article (their coverage of the West/Zampella lawsuit in 2010 was stellar) did actual journalism, rather than mindlessly regurgitating press releases and making top 10 lists. I have the same complaint about most "actual journalism" that gets passed off (in the States) these days too, though.

That's good enough for me! So, if you don't mind...BoringSupreez wrote:You just chose my new avatar.elmagicochrisg wrote:Please not another pony...BoringSupreez wrote:Everyone's getting new avatars. I've had mine for a while now, maybe I should change it too.![]()
I may as well admit, the show has kinda grown on me. Oddly enough, it was those parody videos, not the actual episode lisalover1 linked me to, that drew me in. Anyway, you guys win.

Do they even have the raw models/textures laying around still?RyaNtheSlayA wrote:Now that would certainly be interesting to see. Probably not. It's fun to imagine it though.GameMasterGuy wrote:Do they even have the raw models/textures laying around still?RyaNtheSlayA wrote:Now that would certainly be interesting to see. Re: Random Thoughts Thread
I think playing a lot of video game pinball this past week or so has convinced me that I really want to get an actual pinball machine. The prices are all over the place and I have little to no idea where to begin...
