gt, not sure how i would test the adapter that way. If i had a 2TB IDE, i would rather go that route, but SATA is cheaper cost-wise. Through all the research i've been coming across on upgrading with a SATA drive, it seems that the xbox is very VERY finickey, as is the adapter. It seems that there are more than a few poor-quality IDE to SATA adapters on ebay and it's basically a crap-shoot if it works or not. I really do think that i'll need to reinstall the exploit and start clean, but i don''t want to lose the data i have on my F&G drives. :(

*update

after reading through some very old posts on afterdawn, it does sound like i can rebuild the C drive (dash files) and not have to touch the other drives, thus saving my data. So then, with a flashed BIOS, what would be the easiest method of re-installing the dash files only?

It doesn't have to be a 2TB IDE drive. Just look for any old IDE drive that is larger than 8GB. Perhaps you can get an 80GB or 120GB from an old computer for cheap?

The idea is to go back to a vanilla IDE configuration and see if you still get those errors. If the errors still happen, then you know that the SATA drive & IDE-SATA adapter is not the issue. If the errors don't happen, then it's either the adapter or the way the data is installed.

The fact that it's intermittent seems to indicate that it's a hardware issue. I would find it hard to believe that bad softmod data or partitioning would cause the issue.

gt (you're the only one checking in here),

i think i isolated the cause of my problem. I gave some thought to what you said concerning it pointing to a hardware related issue and not software, and you were 100% correct. I did some tinkering last night/this morning with the SATA>IDE adapter, and it seems that i have a clearance issue. When the top half of the console shell is tightened up, it leaves next to no breathing room, what looks to be happening is the plastic "ribs' underneath the shell is putting enough pressure on the IDE cable that comes off of the HDD and also on the way the adapter sits that it causes the error 13. I must have tested my theory at least 30-40 times. With the top half off, it booted up normally each and every time, no errors, no funny text, drives showed up with remaining space. Then rebooted, but put slight pressure on the area in question as if the top half of the shell is on, and errors every single time. I tried to shave off some of the protruding plastic rib (for lack of a better term) with a utility knife to gain some space, but at 2am, i was still getting errors, so i'll have to get a dremmel to take more off to give as much breathing room as possible under the hood.

It wasn't all a loss though. Not only did i isolate the root of my errors, but i also got crafty with the four rubber feet on the bottom of the case. They have been off ever since i started this project for easy access in and out. I wanted to use double-sided tape to reattach, but couldn't find any in the house, so i grabbed some super-glue and a hole puncher. I cleaned off the feet and contact area of adhesive residue, punched a hole in the rubber right where the bolt would sit underneath, and oila! feet back on permanently with access to the four corner bolts with no need to take off the rubber feet!

Will post back after i have the clearance issue resolved. thanks for pointing me in the right direction :D

Awesome! Nice work in analyzing and tracking down the issue. Feels good, doesn't it? Yeah, I think you found the cause.

I remember one time when I had a non-working light switch. I would disconnect it and find that it still worked. So after doing some investigation, I figured that tightening the switch to the box caused it to slightly flex in the middle. Enough so that the contacts will not close when you moved the switch. So the problem was due to a cheap switch. So going forward, I don't buy the cheap $1.50 switches from Home Depot and instead, pay $4-5 for a better one.
