Castlevania (NES) (AA) Review

Post by Erik_Twice »

I love the original Castlevania, even if I really suck at it.

This may very well be my best review yet. I can see it being much more compact than usual and while it's rough and has sharp edges those exist because I'm walking on unbeaten ground. Really excited about this one :D

Surprisingly, I don't like most of that legacy

You dislike the post-Symphony of the Night stuff and the 3D games I assume?

Well, I haven't tried any of the 3D games but yeah, the metroidvanias aren't exactly my cup of tea. I actually thought I didn't like any Castlevania games because I had only played the DS titles.

I can understand that for sure.

You should definitely play Castlevania III, IV, Bloodlines, and Rondo of Blood sometime if you haven't. I'd like to hear your thoughts on them compared to the original.

Sure! I will actually try to trade for Bloodlines (Well, "Castlevania: The new generation" since I want the European version) soon, it's one of the titles I'm more interested in. It's expensive but I think it runs for less than CVIII PAL (See below). I can also get an American version, since I'm modding my Megadrive anyways.

Castlevania III is very interesting to me in that, unlike the original, it runs at the correct speed for PAL regions. However, I have heard it's really expensive, as it was released after Castlevania IV. It's over 100€ CIB and around 40€ for the cartridge. Very expensive.

Castlevania IV is one of the few SNES games I want, which is unconfortable for me because I don't think I want a SNES right now. Sure, Uniracers is awesome but do I want another console just for three or four games? I have also heard, and I'm sure they are right, that CV4 was actually designed for CVIII mechanics and then adapted, which is why parts of the level design don't make sense. That makes me wary to try it.

Rondo of Blood looks awesome. Sure, I have heard it's the first game with "zombie hallway" syndrome but the intro is so cool I will try it sooner or later.

As you can see, I overthink my game choices

Oh wow, I've never heard of that before. That actually makes a lot of sense, considering CV4's multi-directional whip renders most of the sub weapons completely useless, yet the game seems to expect you to use them anyway.

Anyhow, definitely write a review for any of those when you get the chance!

I love IV, the music on the opening theme is just amazing, 16 seconds in when the music just kicks in proper:

Surprisingly enough, I feel that Konami doesn't like Simon's theme much, they barely make covers out of it and in Perfect Dracula Battle it was found in the second volume. Compared to all the love Bloody Tears gets it's kind of surprising.
