I actually watched all of Dragon Ball/DBZ/DBGT in order not too long ago. I found that the Japanese audio is the only way it's watchable for me because it gives the whole thing a lighthearted vibe and I'm way too old to be trying to take DBZ seriously. The manga artist was primarily known for his goofy gag-manga before entering the realm of shonen-action and it shows, but that's really the charm of the series.

Dragon Ball was by far the best of the bunch though. It was consistently fun and didn't just tease the viewer about things potentially happening NEXT episode the way DBZ did. DBZ works fairly well but the sheer amount of filler made the main draw nostalgia for original Dragon Ball.

I think there's actually a fair comparison between TMNT and DB, especially because they were both created as half-parodies of popular comics of the time.

Slightly off topic, but how good was GT? I've seen various parts of Z, read the entire DBZ manga, and watched a good handful of DB episodes here and there, but not a second of GT.

To me, it feels like Dragon Ball more than DBZ. Quite a few friends of mine did not like it, but I thought it was great. Its definitely different from DBZ, don't expect to walk in and see a ton of hemmoraging super saiyins off the bat.

Garbage. Sorry for the incoming spoilers but Ive got to do some ranting.

My biggest gripe with DBZ is how they made Goku so overpowered. Espescially in the movies and GT. You have all these great, bad ass characters. Vegeta, Piccolo, Future Trunks and Gohan. I mean, in theory they were bad ass. They looked and sounded great. But they had to be little wimps compared to Goku because he is the hero of the show so every one else must be completely useless. They tried to have Gohan to take over Gokus place when he defeated Cell, but no, it had to be Goku who kills Buu. Trunks, Goten and Gohan are all wimps in GT while Pan (the most annoying character ever, my blood pressure is now rapidly rising, just writing her name made me think of GT and how infuriating character she is) was like the secondary hero of the show.

By the Buu arc all the original Z fighters, Krillin, Yamcha, Tien and even Piccolo were useless.

It would have been so much more great if chararacters and villains were more even and had different strengths. One is fast, one is strong, one can take a lot of damage etc. That would have made the games really intresting too, more like a rock paper scissors-type of system. The androids for example could suck in energy from ki blasts with their hands. Its dull and pointless if its just who has the biggest power level-competiton.

The original plan was to have Goku die in Namek as a super saiyan after defeating Frieza. I like all the transformations but by the end of the show, the whole idea of being a super saiyan was kinda inflated so to speak. I mean Trunks and Goten reached SSJ when they were like 6 or 7 years old? Why, because Chi Chi was being mean to Goten?!...
So it would have been great to have variety in saiyan forms, kinda what they tried with the whole Ultra Super Saiyan thing. By that I mean that SSJ3 is obsolete when you know SSJ4 etc. It would have been more intresting if different saiyan forms were better suited for different situations, but none would be superioir.
And the whole thing how SSJ3/SSJ4 Goku could fight with Buu/Omega Shenron with people being like within a mile radius of them. Regular SSJ was already capable of destroying planets etc.

I think if you would take all the good elements out of DB/DBZ, like transformations, fusion, characters like Future Trunks, Vegeta etc and had some good writers, animators etc and enough money so they wouldnt have to rush the episodes, you could make a really great anime.

I still love DBZ but there is so much stuff I would have done differently. I know Akira Toriyama was being rushed by publishers, had to listen to fanbase etc so he is not to blame.

I was really looking forward to GT before watching it; it looks a lot closer to Dragon Ball than DBZ and I was hoping for a fun series. But I really couldn't get into it, the story was dumb and every episode felt like filler. The whole thing just felt like a pile of garbage with DB merch thrown on top to make it look appealing at first glance. So the rational part of my mind would advise against it but another part of me says that if you've already finished DB and DBZ you get extra bragging points for finishing it all with GT.

It sounds like you have issues with the entire series, there are more complaints there about Z than GT.

If you liked Dragonball, I think you will like GT, unless you expect it to be a shit ton of crazy transforming saiyans and shit. Its nothing like DBZ.

For thinking Goku is overpowered, why were you upset that they weakened him? I thought DBZ got stupid after the Cell Saga, and I was pretty happy to see them touch on their roots.

However, if OP saiyans is what you like, GT has that. just not right off the bat.

I think too many people expected transforming villains and super saiyan 6's, even though those people would have still complained if that was given to them.

DBGT actually has humor, which is nice, they return to Vegeta being a villain, they bring back giant monkeys, androids, dragon balls actually matter.

In a lot of ways, I think GT is the best of the 3, but I know many will disagree.

Just watch it and decide for yourself

The fact that they didn't keep increasing the SS levels to 100 alone seems like a good sign, I'll check it out later.
