I don't know if DBZ is really comparable to Pokemon, considering Pokemon actually is still an ongoing franchise. DBZ ended a long time ago.

DBZ's pacing is really only an issue if you try to marathon the series. It goes from OMG WHAT HAPPENS NEXT to uggggggghhhhhhh get on with it already. It's a fun show to watch still, you just gotta turn your brain off for a bit and let yourself get sucked into the action and drama.

It's way more legit in Japanese. I have a lot of nostalgia for it as you all do, good ol' Toonami days, but after watching all of DB-Z in Japanese in 2010-2011 I can never go back. Probably a discussion I don't want to get into though, but it's legitimately one of my top favorite anime's and I'm older now.

Can't stress enough that DB is half the story, Goku is actually older by the end of it when he fights Piccolo, and actually seeing that in action gives so much weight to their rivalry in Z. The whole Piccolo Daimao arc was on par with the stuff in Z and pretty serious. I got some friends into DB that don't even really like Z as much, since it's a lot more adventurous/comical. I love the whole package though.

I did marathon through ALL of Dragon Ball at one point at least. I think I was planning to marathon all of DB and Z up to at least the end of the Cell Games.

I got to around the Captain Ginyuu fight and just gave up.

DB was really fun, I'd never watched a lot of it until then.

I have seen some DBZ stuff in uncut, Japanese. I can definitely tell that the show was hurt and changed a lot on its way to the states. Maybe one day I'll try and re-watch all of in its original Japanese form.

Yeah give it a shot someday if you can. One of the biggest arguments is how different the OST's make the series feel.

I pretty much like to compare all the changes and whatnot to the Robotech vs Macross debate, DBZ US and DBZ JP are pretty much literally two completely different shows.

@Apple: Yeah, the pacing is a world of difference. People who can't get into Z should still give DB a chance. The longest fights were like 2 episodes max. The tournaments were completely kickass, and the fights were really interesting without the beam spam.

Tenshinhan being the third strongest character in all of DB is pretty funny to think about too. I can deal with loser Yamucha becoming nothing in Z, but it sucked it happened to Tien too. lol

Is the thread title making fun of the pronunciation? Considering how it's said in Japanese, it's actually a lot closer than what they say in the English version of the show.

Just saying....

Here in mexico is kinda pronounced the same.

SAI yah YEEN.

I saw it back in 2000 and never thought any different. But here in MEX its on pretty much every day. It seemed different hearing it called that way. But its no biggie.
