The Legends of Zelda
Re: The Legends of Zelda
Majora's Mask might arguably be the darkest game in the franchise though. It's very weird. @Flake: It's uniqueness is something myself and probably other fans love about it. It's not once again about: Zelda, Master Sword, three things, Triforce, Ganon. lol (that said I could play that story forever! kind of like me and the NES Megaman's, just give me more levels/bosses and I'll play hundreds of Megaman's if they kept coming out)
Oh man, is that a good thing or bad?

Re: The Legends of Zelda
I never got around to trying Majora's Mask. Ocarina of Time kind of disappointed me and put me off Zelda, even though the final battles with Ganon were pretty damn epic I must admit
Little off topic, but man I loved these when I was younger

and this
I was a rather hardcore Zelda fan once, but the series lost its magic for me when it went 3D. Mario sort of did too

Re: The Legends of Zelda
Ocarina of Time is my favorite. Everything about the game feels so right, and ties together so well. The length is perfect, the world is large but not so big it's overwhelming, and there's tons of depth and hidden things. The story is possibly the best in the series as well, and the time-traveling mechanic is so cool the first time you do it.
My favorite 2D entry is probably Phantom Hourglass. I know it's technically 3D, but it has 2D gameplay. I like the exploration, and the fact that it's not particularly hard. The ability to mark the map is so helpful, too. The music and story are meh, but the gameplay is addictive.
Link to the Past and Majora's Mask are also great games, but I didn't enjoy them quite as much. Twilight Princess was kind of underwhelming, and I didn't get far as a result of my lack of interest.

Re: The Legends of Zelda
I gotta agree with Xeogred for the most part, A Link to the Past and Ocarina of Time are the best, though I'd probably give the edge to Ocarina personally, probably mostly due to nostalgia as it was my first.
Of the 3D games, Ocarina's definitely the only one without a divisive or crippling feature. Every single one since Ocarina has had some gimmick that splits fans right down the middle, and the ones who love the games tend to love them for some of the same reasons others hate them. Majora's Mask has the 3 day thing, Wind Waker has the cartoony graphics and sailing, Skyward Sword has the control scheme, etc.
Twilight Princess is probably the closest to getting by without any kind of gimmick, but that one still has some issues. It's a good game and all, but I think the warts and gimmicks of the other 3D games make them a bit more interesting to me. I read somewhere once someone making the observation that Twilight Princess can't decide if it wants to be more like Ocarina of Time or more like one of the weirder games like Majora's Mask with stuff like the Twilit, Midna, some of the side characters, etc. I'd say I agree with that.
Of the 2D games, it's hard for me to choose between ALTTP and Link's Awakening. The rest of the games all fall somewhere below them.
...and I've never played the DS titles.

Re: The Legends of Zelda
I can definitely see that with TP. The second half is probably when it turns more into OoT and just gets right to the point with the awesome dungeons and world exploring, when it was at its peak to me.
Gotta wonder, how many of you here played OoT when it was brand new? To this day I still have some of this crazy nostalgia around it, but I loved how "dark" the game was when it was released. Pretty epic intro learning about the three goddesses, then the caves and environments, the "bad future", the music, everything about the game was pretty spooky when I first played it. Just loved the atmosphere. Kind of wonder if it has had that effect on newer players who didn't really live through it at the time.
I guess Zelda's always been fairly serious compared to Mario or whatnot, but yeah. OoT was the first one I really experienced in full, followed up on all the news and the crazy development cycle, then it finally came out and it was the first Zelda I was really informed about going into it since I was a little older at the time. LoZ and LTTP were just kind of random discoveries when I was a younger oblivious gamer. Just a lot of great childhood memories around OoT and my experience with it.

I ignored Zelda until OOT came out. A friend convinced me to give it a chance and I was blown away. Became a Zelda fan ever since.
I remember getting INSANELY excited when "Zelda Gaiden" was announced too.

Re: The Legends of Zelda
Don't even get me started on the DD stuff.
... man in my dream world all the builds of OoT would be released and playable in some form, along with Gaiden.
Instead we got that half assed Master Quest (GC release). I seriously doubt that was the whole extent of what they originally had planned.

Oh man, have you ever read up on Ura Zelda? It was gonna have new, addtional dungeons, new items, story expansion, etc.Xeogred wrote: Instead we got that half assed Master Quest (GC release). I seriously doubt that was the whole extent of what they originally had planned.
Would've been amazing. I was really hoping nintendo would go all out and add that stuff to the 3DS remake, but alas, we pretty much got a graphically enhanced port with some new inventory options.
I suspect though that the extra dungeons probably had elements recycled into Majora's Mask or Wind Waker dungeons.

Re: The Legends of Zelda
I think two things bothered me with Ocarina of Time. I didn't like kid Link. I guess with the 2D ones I never pictured Link as a little, snot nosed brat
Also, Ocarina of Time felt smaller than the old, 2D Zelda games. I couldn't believe how quickly I got to the end of the game
The only things I really loved about Ocarina was the final chapter when you finally meet Ganon, and everything that happens from that point on. That stuff really, really impressed me a lot. The game really goes out on a high note, and I like that you're not playing those parts as little kid Link.
The rest of the game was kind of "meh" for me. It wasn't my first Zelda game, so it didn't impact me the way it seems to have done for a lot of people who were never exposed to Zelda before that.
