I've heard the famicom version of all games are pretty bad. I don't think they're made by the original developer (falcom).
Ys is probably one of my favorite game series. Great music, great designs/art/cutscenes and arcade type action rpg gameplay. Order Ys 1 and 2 Complete for the pc from Japan. They're the best editions (graphics, music and cutscenes have been redone). There's an English patch floating around somewhere on the net. Ys: Oath in Felghana is a very good 3d remake of Ys 3. I think there's an english patch for it too. Ys: Ark of Napishtim is the easiest to find in the west. Bad port for the ps2 with F-quality cg replacing awesome anime cutscenes. It's still a good game though. Probably my favorite action rpg for the ps2.

Ys III is OK, gameplay-wise, but it's mostly good for the music. The re-mixed tracks for the TG-CD version are truly fantastic in places.
Ys I & II (& IV) have an odd play style that may not appeal to some, but they are interesting and have great soundtracks. And again, the best mixes of them are the TG-CD versions. Ryo Yonemitsu for the win!
I know there are Eternal (on PC) and PS2 remakes of the games, and the soundtracks are decent, but they just don't hold up musically to the TG versions.
