I used to work for GameStop, this sort of thing happened all the time.

Of course, we 'field destroyed' the stuff by putting it in our cars. You have no idea how many free controllers, strategy guides and general swag I have. Maybe too many, actually - might be time to field destroy them.

Actually there was controversy here in the UK back in 2007 when GAME bought Gamestation.

Gamestation had a wide and popular selection of retro stock. But after the takeover they wanted rid of retro stock, so bar a small number of popular retro games that were sold off quickly, there were reports that Gamestations up and down the country were burning and dumping stock.
I went into Game yesterday and saw a bunch of unboxed DS games. They were all in Gamestation cases. I don't know how they haven't been sued for owning their direct competition. That doesn't sit well with UK business laws at all.

They nearly were... I was so hoping and praying that the takeover would be stopped, but it was found legal (how I will never understand).

It sucked so much when it happened. Gamestation was the greatest videogame chain we have ever had in this country. Even after Blockbuster took over it, it still remained a fantastic store with friendly, knowledgeable staff, and was a place for hardcore gamers. The retro stock was nothing short of fantastic, with shelves and shelves of boxed retro games across loads of platforms. The Birmingham Gamestation used to be two floors, and had an entire floor dedicated just to retro it was like a museum.

When Game tookover, they claimed they would let it run separately as its own separate identity. But as far as I'm concerned, that was an outright lie. It was just GAME 2, but with a larger pre-owned PS2 library. They had dumped nearly all their retro stock within a year of the takeover (probably within 6 months to be honest).

We lost Chips, we lost Software Store, we lost E-Play. And independent stores are harder to come by now. Dammit we lost all our Game stores bar GAME and Gamestation :(

I used to work for a paper shredding company, and that type of thing was pretty common there too. I remember one time there was about 30 large boxes of audio CDs, new in plastic that were to be destroyed (guess they didn't sell well so they had to make room). I hadn't heard of any of the artists so I loaded them into the shredder - the foil was really cool looking when airborne. Mostly the hardware we had to destroy was computer related - confidential data backups. Still, nothing as sad as the gaming stuff you mentioned.

Ditto. More than once did I get a huge box full of strategy guides that were to be dumpstered. Strangest thing, $40 kept finding its way in my wallet at Half Price books,

Hey if anyone dives another Gamestop, can you send me an intact 360 game case? My daughter thought it was cute to rip the clear plastic off one of mine! :(

The reason they destroy it is simple. They paid for the merchandise, they destroy it so nobody can take their merchandise they paid for, and make a profit off it.

You know people will see even a madden 08 and will somehow get it sold for $2 at the Flea Market.

Gamestop is nothing short of just straight up greedy

While I am against Gamestop this isn't them being greedy. This is standard operating procedure for all of retail.

Locally where I live there was a 'Ninja Game'. Its a small independent chain of shops which has a brilliant retro stock of GBA, SNES, Mega Drive, PS1, N64 and all sorts, it also had a good selection of Anime and other Nerdy stuff. One of the coolest game stores ever period. But due to it being in a town where the population is 95% OAPs and due to the fact that a couple of the staff were arseholes, it closed down 2 months ago. So now to buy games I've got to take a half hour long bus into the city to go to GAME.

I hate that the internet is the only good place to buy Videogames now. I did get an in box PSone out of that store closing down, so its not too bad.
