You'd be surprised, AQ.

Protip, everyone: don't ever work in a food processing plant. Just trust me on this one.

Oh god. I wouldn't be able to stomach it, and I've got a pretty strong stomach.

I had a friend in HS that paid me to bring him back and forth from work, he worked at a slaughterhouse. Let's just say what I saw in there is one of the factors that made me go vegetarian. I'm not talking about like the shock photos of carcasses hanging on hooks, I was expecting that. What disturbed me was the shit covered floors, blood stains everywhere (which led me to believe they often don't bother to clean up), employees dropping meat on aforementioned shit covered floors and plopping it back on the table, employees often being drunk or high (including the manager), guts and random organs going into the grinder, dried brain bits and who knows what else all over the place, real awesome stuff like that. The fact that this is how the meat that's intended for human consumption was being prepared was quite the shock for me. Why the hell wasn't there some kind of inspectors coming around? I saw a lot of this place being that I was there often bring him back and forth, and it was a disgusting shit hole.

I know not every slaughterhouse is America is like this place, but I also know there are several that are. These people didn't give a fuck about what they were serving others or how they treated the "food". It's just a job to them and they could care less that they're putting shit covered gizzards on your plate.

Cheesey Apple, now that you know Yoshi has been handling your food, does that at least bruise your appetite?

I kid, I'm sure Yoshi wore gloves. Even working in a restaurant can make you squeamish about food quality. When I was in high school three friends and I all applied at the same BBQ restaurant in the hopes of being able to work together. The stars aligned, and all four of us were hired. Never mucked with the customers food, but I saw managers take food that had been dropped on the floor, throw it in the deep fryer for a few seconds and serve it saying "that oil will kill any germs".

A game my friends and I would play was "hushpuppy hail". When someone wasn't looking, you'd throw balls of hushpuppy dough that would stick to the ceiling for about forty-five seconds. Then they would drop on the targets head/body. If you were really an ace, you could get about fifteen puppies to drop at the same time. Quite the dumb shenanigans we always played. Extra soap in the dishwasher, rubber bands on the sink hose, replacing iced tea with apple vinegar...

Oh yes a food discussion!

I do eat meat, but probably a lot less than the average person. I live in rural Maine which means I have the luxury of being surrounded by farms. I typically try to buy fresh local grass-fed beef and local chicken/eggs. Local Atlantic fish/seafood is nice too. I try to avoid the slaughterhouse stuff for the obvious reasons.

As far as restaurants go... I have worked at two Wendy's. I only lasted for five days at the second one; I quit when a manager called me a "retard." All I gotta say is: don't eat the chilli.

I also worked in a college cafeteria when I was a student. It was a surprisingly clean and professional working environment. The chef/boss was a hardass about cleanliness and attention to detail, which was a pain in the ass at the time but was certainly a good thing in retrospect.

Off of the food topic, I find that this image is pretty accurate:

The restaurant I work in isn't too bad, but I have learned there are a few things the public wouldn't want to know about the menu. For one, the "baked" potatoes are actually boiled, then wrapped in foil. That's it. There's not a second spent in an oven. Also, they sell pulled pork sandwiches, but the pork is only cooked four times per year. It gets thawed and re-frozen countless times before it's used up. They just microwave a lump and put it on a bun when they need some.
