Yeah, I'm going to pass on Wal-Mart meat. I've never been disappointed in their produce, but I sure do rinse their produce several times before consumption.

...my wife just came upstairs and I said "I'm not going to get our meat from Wal-Mart".

Her response, "Well, Duh".

The more I learn about food processing, the more I'm glad I go the extra mile to grind my own meat. The only bad thing about doing that is that you usually need to cook the meat within a few days or it spoils. The good thing is that I avoid whatever in the hell it is they put in preground beef that keeps it pink for at least a week.

My mom always teases me about food processing. I think I might like to remain happily ignorant about how half the stuff out there gets made... lol.

The ground meat itself is called pink slime, and it has been around for decades. The news will report on it every so few years (it's a cyclical news story) and then people go back to not even batting an eyelid.

The pink stuff is in ground beef only, not in every meat. That's why I purchase chuck roast and do a double grind on it. The ground beef in stores is from multiple cows, from multiple regions, and is ground from multiple cuts of the cow. My ground chuck comes from one cow, one cut, and is graded by the USDA.

I highly recommend grinding your own meat. You don't have to spend a ton on a Kitchen-Aid (although it's the best way if you ask me) to grind your own beef as you can buy a hand grinder on the cheap. You'll notice a difference in taste (you can actually taste the beef) and surprisingly you can save money at the same time as Chuck roast goes for around $2.50 to $4.00 a pound. Most grocery stores will grind the chuck for you at no cost. Also, ask for a chuck roast near the "chuck end". If the butcher doesn't know what you're referring to, find yourself a new butcher.

Oh, and if you're getting ribeye steaks for the grill, I would also suggest telling the butcher, "Ribeye steaks, cut near the chuck end".

Really? Why on earth would you want to do that? You should definitely expose yourself to how absolutely disgusting a lot of food processing is. There's no reason not to other than... well yeah being willfully ignorant because you know you aren't going to like what you see. This is your health you're putting at risk though. Stuff like this isn't something to just brush off. I know it's always easier to just turn a blind eye but it's often not worth it in the long run.

I just jokingly bring that up because my mom always gives me a hard time about it.

But hey, if she's a vegetarian and eats a lot better, she still smokes! I don't smoke. We both win and lose. :P

We all ignore it to some extent. It's not always as bad as PETA makes it out to be (sometimes peta outright lies) but if I knew everything that was going on behind the curtain, I'd probably go vegetarian with the exception of seafood (not farm raised). And know matter how you spin it, pigs are disgusting but bacon makes every food better.

If only cows and pigs had the healing factor of Wolverine...

That said I made a pork and pancetta baked ziti last night that was the best thing I've put in my mouth in weeks.

I'm pretty sure even if I did know everything that went into the food I eat, i'd probably eat it anyway.

It's hard to kill my appetite.
