[NES]Double Dragon 1 - No Coop?

Post by Zerck »

Hi,

yesterday i tried playing Double Dragon 1 for the NES with my buddy (on several emulators). My NES is broken so i can't test the original cardrige right now. But it seems like the CooP Mode just doesn't work. You can choose it in the menu but you'll play alone. I tried severals Emulators all got the same issue.
I really thought that game has 2-Player Coop and searched the web but i didn't find any real info - some people say "Yes it has Coop" some say "it doesn't have Coop".
Is it a emulator issue or does this game really lack 2 player Coop IN THE NES VERSION (i know there may be coop on other systems)? The VS-Mode seems to work.
But i still wonder why there is a Option for Coop in the Menu - Pic related.

Sorry for my bad english im not a native speaker.

The most notable difference the NES version has from the arcade game is the omission of the arcade's two players cooperative game mode. Instead, the two-players mode in the main game ("Mode A") is done by alternating, although both players take control of Billy. In this version, Jimmy Lee (the Player 2 character in the arcade version) serves as the main antagonist. After defeating Willy, the original final boss from the arcade game, Jimmy will appear before the player for the true final battle.

Total bait and switch with that "2 Player" option. You're not alone in being surprised by that one.

You could MAME the original for 2 player.

Or emulate the Sega Master System version (Which is better than the NES version IMO).

Seconded.

Retroware did an episode a while back that explored the differences in the various ports of the original Double Dragon. It's kinda nuts how different each game turned out.

Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

Well no that wasn't a RetrowareTV contributor, just a user submission. It was a good episode though, we've featured Joe before as an R Dub Spotlight.

Oh, you're right. And now I cannot find the video I thought I was linking to. It was, iirc, some Canadian girl comparing Double Dragon on the NES, SMS, and I think she mentioned the TG-16 version too. Not sure where that video is, though.
