Corporations and the discarding of (gaming) Product.
Re: Corporations and the discarding of (gaming) Product.
I just wish they were recycling this stuff instead of just chucking it into a dumpster. Why not even just give it away? Either way they are not making money... they are just paying people to destroy things.
Just from a repair point of view, a lot of these parts or wires can be "salvaged" to some extent. I know every once in a while I need a spare connector, extended wire, or a few replacement components for something. Heck... even those DVD cases would be nice. I have 1 or 2 cracked Xbox cases I'd like to replace. For 1 penny I'd buy a game just for that.
**another edit**
Just on a side note - It's disturbing to me how wasteful we are as a culture. Products are over produced to the point they depreciate from $200 to literal garbage. This is a problem much more widespread than Gamestop as flojo pointed out.

This really is really sad. There is no justification for destroying product.fvgazi wrote:I just wish they were recycling this stuff instead of just chucking it into a dumpster. Why not even just give it away? Either way they are not making money... they are just paying people to destroy things.

I've had a GS clerk refuse to sell me a GC disc once because it was supposedly defective/too scratched. I demanded I got it though, since they did have the case sitting with the others still, and I mark out hard for GC discs.
Sure enough, the game worked fine when I got it home.
However, if these items are proven to be defective, I certainly understand them wanting to prevent anyone trading back defective merch - like flojo said.

They could donate them to charity stores though. I know HMV have done that in the past with old promotional singles and CDs etc.Nemoide wrote:This isn't too surprising to me. I believe it's a common practice for products that can't be sold back to the distributor.
Libraries, for instance, very often destroy or throw out books that are considered to not have enough value to justify keeping around. Space is limited and you can't keep everything forever. I'd be more upset if they were destroying copies of Snatcher or Panzer Dragoon Saga or something. It's not like the titles they're getting rid of have some particular archival value and it isn't Gamestop's business to keep every copy of every game safe.
Edit: And a few clothes store chains have done that too with old overstocked clothes from previous seasons.
No reason why Gamestop or any other game store chain couldn't do the same.

Not game products, but at the warehouse Im at they are starting to throw away boxes upon boxes of parts to computers/printers and that type of stuff.Although not useful to the goodwill I thought that was pretty crazy value wise, but the way it is because stuff is taking up much room and is outdated or not used.
And for the gaming end,in theory pretty much the same aspect except we get all nutty over it cause we are gamers, but this pretty much happens in every field of mass production and is wasteful and easier than doing otherwise or else they would just sell it themselves.
I remember awhile ago I got a dreamcast game from a local retro shop and it had a defective gamestop sticker on it and I bought it anyways and it worked fine. Its probably protocol to add this sticker to products as a marker to not sell or use even if it works perfectly fine.
Also how would you know when they do this method,do you just chill around dumpsters waiting for a score.

If you can see the future while remembering the past, you may just have control of the present.

I know why Gamestop does this, but that doesn't make it acceptable. Give it to Goodwill or just set the box out front of the store with a sign that says "CHEAP AS FREE." I'll take it. Like someone said, you'd be making no money as opposed to making no money while paying people to break it. It's just logical.

You know there is something wrong with the way our economic system works if its more profitable for corporations to take the time to destroy products (wasting natural resources) than give them away for free or sell them for some ridicolously low price just to get rid of them.

I can tell you guys one reason why strategy guides are destroyed. Corporate feels that if they donate the product or mark it down that customers would just wait to buy from thrift stores or until they went discounted. It's the same with magazines at most stores. I destroy hundreds of magazines a month that aren't sold.
