SUCH a good game. I downloaded it on my Wii about 10 minutes after I first heard that it existed (I didn't have an SNES when I was kid, and didn't get into retro gaming until about two years after I got my Wii).

I've noticed that for whatever reason a lot of people don't like SMRPG. I guess they expected it to be like Paper Mario?

I mean they have some similarities, sure (the platforming segments, Mario using a hammer, seeing enemies before you encounter them, timed hits, flowers/honey for FP, etc), but they're really very different games.

I would argue Adventure should be in there somewhere, largely due to the different styles of gameplay in the game. But Action is the primary focus of the game. It's the fundamental thing you do.

I think people ignore old-style adventure games because they're not on their radar so much.
Action-adventure is not the same thing as point-and-click adventure and graphic/puzzle adventure (Myst, 7th guest, D etc).
I did not say action-adventure is the same as adventure, at all. I was saying there are adventure elements to Zelda, but the primary focus is action (thus making it action/adventure).

Even if Nintendo says it's any sort of RPG ... in my opinion they'd be wrong.

My fantasy comment was more that it's involved in the genre choice in the poll more than anything. Science Fiction has sort of crazy elements too, but modernly we wouldn't consider any of it fantasy. I'm not saying Zelda games aren't fantasy oriented, obviously many of the halmarks are usually there. I'm saying that not every Zelda game is strictly fantasy oriented. There are different themes in many of the games that are stronger or more front and center than the franchise's staple fantasy-esque elements.

That's a shame if people are down on Mario RPG because it's not Paper Mario.
And an actual Zelda RPG would be very interesting I imagine it'd be unlike other games in RPG and action/adventure genres.

Zelda is 100% not an RPG. No stats, no dice rolls, no levels: not an RPG. It is an action/adventure game.

Zelda is not a roleplaying game because there's no roleplay, no possibility of acting or personality choice. For the same reasons Final Fantasy is not an roleplaying game as there's no roleplay or acting.

However, videogamers call games like Final Fantasy, Wizardry, Shin Megami Tensei and Diablo "RPGs" because they all have level-up mechanisms. So is Zelda an RPG? No, because it doesn't have level-up mechanisms, it has powerups in the vein of Gradius, but you don't level up.
