Someone already mentioned it in this thread, and I neglected to mention I gave it a try too.
When you open up the DC, inside the GD-ROM assembly there is a tiny screw referred to as a potentiometer that does something akin to calibrating the laser. It has been reported that it solves some but not all issues with disc reads.
Youtube has a ton of videos on this, but this one is pretty good.
As I said, I tried it by turning the screw left and right, and it did not go for me, probably only because my issue was much worse, and I still suspect the spindle motor just quit on me. If blasting out the unit to clean all the dust and dirt out doesn't do it, this might be worth a try.
