Re: turn base rpg vs action rpg
I like speedy turn-based systems found in games like FFVI and Chrono Trigger. And I think it's kinda cool how such games can be completed by people of all skill levels; you don't need superior hand-eye coordination or dexterity, just patience and dedication.
Action RPGs are great too of course. I think the Ys and Zelda (omg not a real RPG!... just bear with me) games have the best real-time combat systems. Only problem here is that a poor real-time combat system can totally break a game, whereas a poorly designed turn-based system can be tolerated a bit more. Take Lagoon for example, the combat is so terrible that it's almost unplayable for some people. Even SoM has a terrible combat system, with the weapon charging and whatnot. Still a great game though.
Seems like many modern RPGs have attempted to combine turn-based and real-time systems. I really haven't seen this done in an effective manner yet, the combat in games like Star Ocean and Tales... still feels kinda laggy and awkward to me. But to be fair, I'm mostly a retro gamer and probably just haven't discovered games with great hybrid combat quite yet.

^That SoM has a "terrible weapon system" is pure opinion. I myself rather like it. Overall, I prefer ARPG to turn-based RPG, but I do like the latter's implementation in many games.

Re: turn base rpg vs action rpg
I like turn based/strategy more.
I enjoyed Disgaea, Vandal Hearts, Shining Force series, and Suikoden series.
My brain (although I try) cannot handle some action RPGs.( Looking at FF series)
I enjoyed FF X and for the life of me I cant play the rest after that. I feel like I'm just pushing buttons and thats okay for fighters but not for rpgs.
I like that I can (strategy RPGs) leave the game going, while I go do something else. I can make a sandwich, go to the bathroom, take a breather, go outside for a bit.
I cant really do that with some games.
It may be easier to get into these types of games than with Action RPG's. Maybe some want more action than some boring turn rpg.
But to each their own.

Wha!? Of all the opinions I have encountered today, this is the one I disagree with the most!BoneSnapDeez wrote: Even SoM has a terrible combat system, with the weapon charging and whatnot. Still a great game though.
When I was a kid, I loved turn based RPG's. Nowadays, I cannot stand them. Too much waiting and grinding. I feel detached from the gameplay.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

That's similar to how I feel. I absolutely loved turn based RPGs when I was young and have fond memories of even the mediocre ones, but I can't easily get into most of them these days. I can still stand a good turn based RPG every now and then, or when I have a good deal of free time, but I'm much more drawn towards Action RPGs, where I feel more directly involved in the action.Flake wrote: When I was a kid, I loved turn based RPG's. Law of averages. On a long enough timeline, crazy stuff happens!o.pwuaioc wrote:That's twice now we agreed on something. Hell has officially frozen over.

It's ok, I'm still here to tell you how wrong you are. SoM's melee combat was clunky as hell. It was fixed with SD3. The magic system in SoM was much more usable, even if you weren't abusing chain casting.o.pwuaioc wrote:That's twice now we agreed on something. Hell has officially frozen over.Flake wrote:Wha!?
