Finally got around to completing this game. I really enjoyed it and all its weirdness. Too bad it seems we'll never officially get any of the rest of the series here.

Yeah don't expect another Mother release ever again.

Unless you count the fan-made Mother 4, which looks pretty cool.

Considering how rabid the fanbase is, and how Nintendo loves printing money with their games, I really don't understand this at all. They have the first two games translated already, and at this point it should be obvious to anyone at Nintendo that they can charge just about whatever amount they like for the games. I'd love to see all three released on the 3DS or something, and I'm not even a fan of the series, LOL.

You have a point. Honestly I bet a lot of people would bitch but if Nintendo put out either 3 in America or made a new one and charged double what games normally cost the fans would still line up and buy it just to show Nintendo that they are serious about their Mother.

Royalty fees are too high, in Nintendo's opinion. The likeness/music of some of the things in game are way too close to their real-life counterparts. Nintendo has also been unwilling to put in the effort to change the game content. At least, that's the reason I've heard.

Yeah I've heard that too, but it's not really that difficult or expensive to change one or two songs. (I've read the article detailing all of the things, but I think a good 80% of them are too vague to be actionable.) If Square/Enix can completely remake the DQ games or the early Final Fantasies, and turn a profit doing it, I don't see how Nintendo can balk at making a few changes to release a game they ought to know is going to sell out whatever print run they give it. Back when Earthbound was $100 a cart, I could see Nintendo being reluctant. Given it's jumped to nearly $200 a cart (meaning people are in a buying frenzy at this point), it's probably time someone over at Nintendo redid the math to figure out if it might not be a justified expensive.

What really gets me about Earthbound was the fact that they actually took out the demo that was supposed to be in Brawl. I can understand taking out the Fire emblem one but Earthbound!? To be honest i think Nintendo blew their opportunity with Mother 3. There was a time where releasing it would've been appropriate (around the time Brawl was released) but if they release it now, I don't think it would do as well unless they hype it up like crazy at a convention.

Just how many sales do you think an Earthbound re-release would generate?

Look at Xenoblade, which had the epitome of "rabid fanbase" clamoring for its release. The number of pre-orders and sales is far, far lower than most people would guess based on the extreme amount of effort put into trying to get it released. Earthbound would likely have even lower sales.

Look at Chrono Trigger DS. One of the best and most-loved RPGs ever made, and the DS game sales were a (relative) flop. It's pretty much the definitive version of the game and it quickly became bargain bin fodder with only ~400k sales in North America. The Final Fantasy IV remake sold more copies in the US alone!
