Best PSP puzzle games?

Post by noiseredux »

I think we all know that puzzle games are great for portable devices. I do have a few for PSP that I play pretty often, but I'm wondering what some really great ones are that might be missing out on. So let's use this thread to shed light on some unique and fun puzzle games... pictures and descriptions are far more interesting than just a list of titles. :D

Capcom Puzzle World is one that I'm still in search of. I don't really care what's on the UMD besides Super Puzzle Fighter II. Sure I've got it for PS3 already (and actually for GBA, PS1, DC... ) but Puzzle Fighter begs to be played on that gorgeous widescreen! (So yeah, if anyone nabs a CIB copy for me from their local Gamestop, I'd be thrilled to pay the $6 + shipping).

Lumines - pretty obvious. Everyone who owns a PSP should really own Lumines. I've never played the second game, though. Is it really any different than the first?

Gunpey - an interesting game developed originally by Gunpei Yokoi for the WonderSwan. Basically falling lines of different angles need to be arranged into connecting branches that look a bit like sine waves. Completing a full wave from the left to the right of the screen clears the wave. Very unique.

Puyo Pop Fever - I don't think this was released in the US, but I found the EUR version. It's Puyo! I win!

So what else is really good? Feel free to include retail releases, PSN games, Minis, and even PSOne Classics released on PSN...

I know there are two versions of Tetris released as Minis (one is really Tetris, the other is Tetrimos or something like that).

Also, has anyone played Numblast? It's a PSN exclusive game, and looks sort of interesting but curious if anyone can speak from experience?

EDIT: Almost forgot, I'm also seeking out a copy of Ultimate Block Party which is apparently a pretty cool Pandel de Pon clone. (I'm not a fan of Panel de Pon games, but figured I'd check this out for the Together Retro month...)

Not really unique, but you added Tetris, so I'll add Lemmings.

All 120 original levels, plus 36 new ones, Datapack support, and a Userlevel editor. All the levels are pre-rendered 3D, but the gameplay sticks to its 2D roots.

Sure it's a puzzle-platformer, but I've always felt it leaned more in a puzzle direction.

Lumines II added more modes and did include a demo of Every Extended Extra (EEE), but some stages used pop music that hasn't aged well at all!

If you had to choose one, I would stick with original for the stake of its purity (Lumines Electronic Symphony does retain closer to 1 than II)

There are several puzzle games in the Minis program that always get ignored. Well, Minis are largely ignored. One of the best puzzler-platformer in the said program (and dare I say, the entire PSP library) is Where is my Heart? It's a puzzle platformer with polished graphics and somber atmosphere. This game plays like The Lost Vikings.

There is a Lemmings clone also in the Minis program, Ambassador Kane. It's a good game for the price.

I actually have Where Is My Heart? already, and love it. I guess I never think of it as a puzzle game, but more of a weird platformer. But you are right, it is really amazing. I agree that Minis get largely ignored. I think the problem is a lot of them don't have previews on PSN, so when you're browsing it's not always as easy to impulse-buy based on description alone.

Echochrome is a game I really enjoyed. It takes a kind of M.C. Escher-esque art style and turns it into a puzzle game. You rotate a camera and alter the path for the character to take and solve various objectives.

Initially, I thought that Where is My Heart? is a platformer Mario style! I was so wrong.

games like Hot Pixel or Work Time Fun... I guess those could kind of be lumped into the puzzle category. No? They're, y'know -- Warioware clones basically. Fun stuff.

I see them as arcade games, but I am not sure anymore. Damn, genre-benders.
